Many of you poker players out there would already have heard of the Moneymaker Effect, when back in Chris Moneymaker, a 27-year-old accountant and amateur poker player from Tennessee, United States, outlasted 838 other players to win the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. What was even more remarkable was that Moneymaker gained entry to the event by winning a $86 poker satellite tournament on PokerStars. At the time this changed how the masses perceived online poker with players then realising that staying at home in front of a computer screen could be more profitable than actually going to work.
At PokerStars School we have a similar story, maybe not to the same scale, but really impressive none the less. It’s the story of PokerStars School member ‘Smart747’ who turned the last 75 cents he had in his account into an amazing $32,000 score by winning Spin & Go’s, one of which earned him a satellite ticket into the Sunday Million where he finished 5th. This impressed us so much that we asked none other the man himself, Chris Moneymaker to review his play so we all can learn how it’s done. Watch part one below.
PokerStars School: Tell us a little about yourself.
Smart747: I’m 28-years-old and I’ve only been playing poker for 3 years and all on PokerStars. My job is in the commercial sector and besides sports, my hobby is of course poker.
PokerStars School: How long have you been a member of the school, and what do you like most about it?
Smart747: I joined the poker school here soon after I created my PokerStars account. I’ve found it so helpful for learning the game. The courses are great and I particularly enjoy the live training sessions.
PokerStars School: Tell us about how you qualified for the Sunday Million?
Smart747: I literally had only 75 cents left in my account. I fired up 3 Spin & Go’s and to my surprise, and amusement, I won all 3 of them. I then had a total of $3.50. There was a special Spin promo running at the time where you could win a ticket to the Sunday Million, I played, and you guessed it, I won the ticket…
