  • UK PLAYERS BIRMINGHAM

    HELLO

IF THERE ARE ANY PLAYERS ON THE POKER SCHOOL WHO LIVE IN THE BIRMINGHAM AREA, OR COULD GET TO BIRMINGHAM, AND WOULD BE INTERSTED IN ARRANGING A VISIT TO THE LOCAL CASINO IN WALSALL (GROSVENOR, JUST OFF JUNCTION 10 OF THE M6) ONE NIGHT TO ENTER THE POKER COMPETITION PLHE. THEY PLAY EVERY NIGHT WITH BUYINS RANGING FROM £5 TO £50 WITH UNLIMITED BUYINS FOR THE FIRST 90 MINS, TOURNAMENTS ALWAYS START AT 9PM. THEN POST A REPLY OR SEND ME AN EMAIL AT J2595@HOTMAIL.COM. AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN PUT SOME FACES TO THE NAMES.

The 'unlimited re-buys' bit gets me.

I played a £10 tourny in Torquay, and everyone was going all in every 3rd hand roughly, it was way beyond the so called maniacs over on the fun side here.
I played two hands, in about an hour, AQs, big raise called by K4o and one other, flop K4x, he went all in, other guy called, I folded, half my stack gone. half an hour later, when down to 200 chips(1000 starting), BB 50, I went all in with JTs (the best hand for half an hour lol), 4 callers! me out, I go home, I lose £10, very strange play, is this normal?
Not one time was the flop seen for 50, not once.

Top 4 got paid, and while driving home I realised that I probably came 5th! most people seemed to put in £50+ so losing £10 not so bad.

Let me at em with a no rebuys tourny!

THERE ARE USUALLY ABOUT 80 RUNNERS YOU START WITH 1000 PLAY CHIPS, AND THE ALWAYS PAY TOP 10 WHETHER THERE ARE 20 OR 200 PEOPLE, THE BEST COMP WOULD BE EITHER THE £20 OR £25 ONES THERE IS USUALLY AROUND £4000 PRIZE MONEY SO THERE ARE NOT THAT MANY REBUYS MAYBE 1 REBUY OR TOP UP PER PERSON. PEOPLE ARE NOT TOO CRAZY BEFORE THE BUYINS STOP AND ONCE THE BUYINS STOP PLAY CAN GET PRETTY TIGHT ESPECIALLY THEN THERE ARE LIKE 20 LEFT. ITS GOOD FUN

This is not uncommon in low buy in tournaments from $5 - $50 level, to see this kind of play. I see it all the time. I sometimes compute the "point of no return" to figure where a person must finish to at least break even in these events. Of course, it's great for a tourney, cause it adds to your potential prize pool. The key, I believe is sizing up your opposition, analyzing your play and results, factor in your luck, and then budget what you think you should invest and act accordingly. Somedays it is just not wise to compete in this type of structure, and other days, when the "stars" are aligned...you can benefit from the investment of the loose loosers.
Your play has to vary depending on your decision, of course. If the "stars" are alligned, you can find yourself not needing rebuys and just do the add on for a maximum return, when you are playing a bit looser than you will after the re-buy period, and amassing chips for the tight later play. I think it's important how these are structured, but if you learn a little about how people play them and how they can work for you, they are doable. At least that's what I see happening. 8O

in the £20 & £25 comp 10th usually pays £100 so you can usually have another buyin and a top up and still make money for a top 10 finish, more often than not when it gets to 11 12 or 13 people left they will usually take £100 per person off the top and add those players to the payout, meaning you will still get paid for finishing say 12th, which is nice

I play at Walsall and the Rainbow in Birmingham a lot. I've found that the Walsall tourneys have a lot more maniacs than the Rainbow tourneys so I only go down to the smaller tourneys at Walsall now, will definately be there for the 'Midland Masters' though.

I once saw a guy drop £150 in buy ins in the Friday night £5 tourney meaning he need to finish in the Top 2 to make any money, of course he won it which makes me think there is a method to his madness lol.

Just seen your profile and you were talking about winning a £100 NLHE comp at a local casino? where? Apart from the festivals I don't know where there is a £100 NLHE tourney and you didn't win any of the £100 comps at any of the festivals recently. I'd really be interested to know where the £100 NLHE tourney is as I much prefer it to PLHE.

              Cheers,

              Matt

i won the money in a competition at the grosvenor at walsall in a competion they used to have once a month on a sunday i won it at the end of april 2002 but they stopped it. sundays used to be £20 PLHE with a £100 NLHE comp on the third sunday of the month but they scrapped it in favour of a £50 PLHE competition every sunday.
but like you say other than the festivals now there is only PLHE whivh is a shame because i prefer NLHE as well.
