Level Up Your Home Game This October

Any experienced home game player will know there are three elements that set a good home game apart from an average one, the key factors that give the home game that professional feel. They are, the cards, the chips and the table. The latter two are relatively expensive and you’re unlikely to change your chips or table very frequently. But cards, now there’s something that you can switch up from game to game or break to break and it won’t break the bank. Two or four colour? Small or wide index? Classic or modern? The list goes on and with all the different deck designs, the possibilities are endless.

A quick glance at the PokerStars Store, reveals that, at the time of writing, there are six different decks available for purchase. Throughout October you can level up your home game with the PokerStars Red Custom Card Deck and what’s more you can do it for less as the deck is available at 25% off the usual price, meaning it’s available for £10.12, rather than the usual £13.50.

So, what sets this deck apart? Well to start with it’s made by Fournier, who not only supply the cards for the EPT, but they are a benchmark for quality playing cards. Fournier are one of the oldest and most prestigious playing card brands and have over 150 years of expertise. This particular deck features a sleek geometric design in vibrant red, two colour suits and is made from 100 % plastic to ensure durability. Oh and course there’s a cut card included to help give your home game that professional feel and two jokers if you fancy spicing up your home game with some jokers wild action.

The History of the Playing Card

The commonly held belief is that the playing card was invented in China in the 9th Century during the Tang dynasty and it wasn’t until the 14th Century, around 1360 to be exact, that the playing card made it to Europe, via Egypt. The earliest European mention of playing cards appears in 1371 in a Catalan language rhyme dictionary.

Whilst cards have been divided into four suits, seemingly forever, those four suits have changed throughout the centuries. There have been many variations, with one such early set of four being: goblets, gold coins, swords, and polo-sticks. In Germany, acorns, leaves, hearts and bells were the favoured suits and indeed decks using these suits can still be found.

Cards didn’t always have the value of the card printed at the corner, this wasn’t common place until the end of the 18th century. The United States introduced the joker into the deck. It was devised for the game of euchre, which spread from Europe to America beginning shortly after the American Revolutionary War.

If you ever get dealt the same hand twice in a row, don’t start to wonder if the deck has been shuffled properly, as McGill university reported in 2018, no one has or likely ever will hold the exact same arrangement of 52 cards as you did during your home game. They continued, “It seems unbelievable, but there are somewhere in the range of 8×1067 ways to sort a deck of cards. That’s an 8 followed by 67 zeros. To put that in perspective, even if someone could rearrange a deck of cards every second of the universe’s total existence, the universe would end before they would get even one billionth of the way to finding a repeat.”
