  • What is tilt?

Hello all, I thought I would start a topic on tilt and what tilt actually is. Tilt comes in various forms, and how we deal with it and look at it as players can be interpreted differently.

There are many reasons why a player may tilt, bad beats, not having the run of the cards and outside distractions are just a few examples.

How do we define what tilt is though?. Would you class tilt as playing weaker hands out of position?, for example. I personally do not think this as relevance as that would make all LAG players tilters.

What do I class as the main tilt problem, when you start to think that everyone is bluffing you?.
This I think is the first signs of tilt.

Secondly I think that when the heart is not in it, half hearted shoves and calls hoping to hit and get lucky, not folding to Tag players who have reraised you in a pot.

My main reason for tilt is my young children, who constantly run around making noise and completely breaking my concentration.

So how do we deal with tilt?. Simplicity is just to stop playing and regroup our thoughts.

So what do you as players define tilt as?.

Tilt.. is basically a state of emotional/ frustration in which a player exhibits a less than optimal strategy, usually the player will become over-aggressive and stray away from the ABCs of poker.

There are also outside factors eg. life/enviorment that can put a player on tilt.

"Composure and self criticism" are imo the most important attributes for a poker player to have overcoming tilt.(besides of course a BR and good BRM) There are ways to improve "Composure and self criticism" eg. exercise, proper diet, reading, music etc.. basically anything to relax your mind.

Sounds like the wife rules the remote.

Back to topic. As already established, tilt is an emotional state that has players reacting in a less than optimum manner. For some, recognizing tilt is the initial problem. It is like the guy who enjoys his beer telling you he isn't an alcoholic. Until you see the problem, things never do improve.

Once a player gets to the stage where they admit there might be a problem, the first thing is to learn what is the trigger. Just remember that trigger is never beyond your control. If you think tilt is caused by the play of the cards, then you are in denial. You're closer to a solution, but not there yet.

When the player begins to realize tilt is their fault, they can devise a cure. Find out what causes that emotional breakdown. If it is the RNG, find another distraction where you can release the frustration related to something beyond your control. Not as a permanent solution, but something that relieves the stress and allows you a clearer mind.

If the emotional factors are within your control, such as children running amok, find a workable solution. It could be as simple as playing poker when the kids are doing homework or asleep. The idea is to approach the game when you are both physically and emotionally ready to devote the necessary time. Such a compromise may mean that you need more time for real life than the virtual felt.

If I'm a bit tilted, I, a bit like CannonLee, put some comedy on through my earphones when I'm playing and get tilted. I've got several episodes of The Goon Show on my Android tablet as well as a few clips from Mock The Week. Does a good job of making the tilt fizz away.

                        I never used to tilt.

But nowadays, logging on to the forum and finding 90% of the posts are by holdemace486 occasionally pushes me over the edge.

Ho hum. Think I'll pay that "other" place a visit

Now that is possibly the funniest thing I have ever read. Lets quote maths, 90 percent posts by myself asking questions and learning fast. Where as no one else wants to learn so I will use full advantage of this poker school, not CHAT forum ,and ask as many questions as it takes to become a pro poker player.
It is called learning Darkman, you seem an able player so instead of trying to get me to bite why do you not share some of your poker wisdom?.
And also some of the others who just seem to sit on the side line, and then my 90 percent would drop, as more people post.
I see posts getting huge amount of views, but how many actually comment?.
And the ironicalness of this darkman is you have a choice to read or not to read a post, and you choose to read mine.

Up there, in bold, is my favorite new made-up word. It used to be "amazeballs," but now it is "ironicalness." Because "ironicalness" is amazeballs.

Finally a post of yours I found worth reading, holdemace.

And holdem, we have to read your posts just to make sure you aren't putting out a bunch of nonsense as facts. A new user is going to see your name all over the place and possibly think that means you know what you're talking about.

holdemace486 seems to want to learn, and to have a tendency to blow up at people who talk back at him. Sounds like 90% of the regulars on this forum imo.

Comedy idea sounds interesting. I should give that a shot.
