although i cant play these tourneys, i still have an oppinion on the subject in general. you can do this in ANY tourney whether it be live or online. i dont believe (as i've stated in previous threads on this subject) that you (or anyone else playing a tourney) should have any problem with this,as they're dead money, and we should LOVE dead money. i know i do! free chips for the takin' upsets you why again? less competitors to have to actually play against upsets you why again? let em all sit out. i'll be happy to take their chips. ..... jmo stackk em high! Hey HCTiger01, I can understand your frustration at all these players entering a tournament then continuing to sit out for the majority of it. But this is not against the rules of tournament poker, and many of them would argue as to why take part in the first 30 mins or so, when there are so many players participating in this particular tournament who have no respect of a player who maybe raises a pot 4 BB with a AA, KK, QQ and gets reraised over the top allin with a player not to bothered about going out early and shows J-8 off/suit only to hit maybe 88 on the turn and river, This is the kind of play what is putting most higher ranked players off from participating in the first 30 mins, thus avoiding a big negative score. many players now are waiting for 50% of the field to be eliminated before rejoining the play. I myself don't agree with players sitting out, but i can understand why they do. all i can advise is you concentrate on your own game and hopefully you will out rank the sitters when we reach the finishing line. Good Luck To You umbup:

Sitting out the whole tourney works at the beginning of the month for a while, until you reach enough points that it doesn't give you any points to sit out anymore. Then you've got to start playing to progress even more. Maybe move on to folding every hand but delaying every hand too. That will get you a bit farther. Then when you've mastered that move on to playing AA only, maybe KK if you're feeling lucky against the other players' ace-rag. That might get you the crucial double up you need to make the top 1440.

              Hi Hc welcome aboard.

The reason that the sit and blind off strategy will only take a player so far in the context of the monthly rankings is because at some point (it was 1660 points in the former PSO,not sure what it is now...) the scoring throttles,or chokes if you like, will kick in. Meaning that the plateau one must reach for a positive outcome will climb and less points will also be rewarded for this outcome, while any negative outcomes will be amplified.

And to me mtnestegg is 100% on point, you WANT sitters on your table and should be learning how to exploit this to get those dead chips (right there is something that is a worthwhile thing to learn for cash MTT's and SNG's as I've sat on tables in the earlier stagers of these with 3 or more sitters numerous times).

I don't know how many of these that you're running into in the new PSO but the other type of sitter is what I always called the "sit-and-shoves"---the players who would sit out for the first several levels and then jump in before they blinded off and shove ATC's,hoping for a luckbox hit,and keep on shoving until they either built a stack or busted. Not the worst strategy for a bad/lazy player to try and get a free penny or better under the old format, not sure how it translates in the new one though.

Just pick your spots (always keeping position and table dynamics in mind) to attack and get your share of the dead money when the sitters are in abundance. Remember your opponents will be expanding their range as well.

Welcome to PSO tiger. Moxie said it well - the more points you have, the harder it is to score points. Example - a player in 25000 place and a player in 2nd place make the final table. The person in 25000 place will score huge points for finishing in the final 9, while the person in 2nd will make far fewer points, even if they win the tourney.

If you study the scoring system on the PSO web site, you'll get an idea of how it works.

As for sitting out, running the clock - it is FIRST about reaching positive points and SECOND about winning a poker hand. That is the nature of the league and the scoring system. It means we have to adjust our game, using the tools and strategies that work. If you bust out in 9999 place with AA against a donk who busts out three hands later, you will score negative points, and fall down the standings. The donk doesn't even know the standings exist. Sit out, run down the clock, fold every hand for the first hour - whatever keeps you in the tourney and hopefully into the positive points. Later in the month, as your points increase, you will have to adapt and be more aggressive, since you will have to run deeper into the tourneys to score positive points.

In the good ole days (June), I would say something like, "See you at the tables." With 10000 players in most tourneys, we'll be lucky to see each other once a month.

So, good luck and enjoy the league.

                  Herk

Sitting out will get you around 1650 -1800 range

Sanchez_sb (one of the leaders) lost -9 points for finishing 1150ish .... sitting will get you nowhere and is not a factor :P

Additionally, if you cannot beat people sitting out long-term, you got more important things to worry about

believe me ... it's not that i don't empithize w/ how mind numbingly boring those situations can be but (especially in a league such as this) you need to keep your eye on the bigger picture of EOM standing and the free (if you consider your time free) money you will be padding your BR with and remember.... survival is paramount till ur +points... and ur also right about it being frustrating at casino juicey cash game where a couple pp are sitting out and you want in, but casinos put time restraints on this, and if the shoe were on the other foot, would you want to be booted from a juicey game cause you wanted to grab a quick bite or something? probably not . just something to think about... stack em high!
