VPP's are awarded fo paying buy-in to tournaments or paying rake in cash games.

You get 5.5 VPP for every $1 in tournament fee you pay, note that is not buy-in, for example a $10 buy-in tournament with $1 fee will earn you 5.5 VPP.

Cash tables pay variable VPP's depending on the number of players, 8 or more player tables pay 6VPP for every $1 rake per hand that PS take, 7 or less player tables pay 5,5 VPP for each dollar in rake. Remember that the rake is split between the number of players in the hand.

You get vpps in all the games where rake is collected, be it cash games or tournaments. Here you have the details: http://www.pokerstars.com/vip/earn/

But also this is different in micro-stakes cash games. At micro-stakes they pay more VPPs per $ rake, and do not differentiate between how many are at the table. These are some of the reasons why micro 6-max Omaha hi/lo tables are ammazing for scrounging your 20 VPPs with a tiny roll.

Apologys if I / we have mis-read the following extract from PokerStars VIP Club notes on VPP's .

              How do I earn VPPs?
You earn points by playing in PokerStars games which have a rake or fee.

In PokerStars tournaments, you earn points based on the entry fee. You receive VPPs at the rate of 5.5 VPPs (and corresponding FPPs) for each $1.00 USD in fee paid, or 8 VPPs (and corresponding FPPs) for each €1.00 EUR in fee paid. Fractional VPPs will be awarded in hundredths.

For example, if you play a tournament which costs $10+$1 to enter, $10 goes into the prize pool, and $1 is the entry fee. You earn 5.5 VPPs for each $1 USD in entry fees, so you would receive 5.5 VPPs for playing this event.

I'll work on my maths and correct my example in post #3 when I've worked out where I went wrong.

                my bad bog.

your buy in looks like $10+$1 so it would be 5.5

No worries, I chose the easy example option, yours was probably a better one as its more inline with the entry level of the majority.

Interesting if you do the maths for those hunting 150VPP for the Global League Premier Division top payouts and thinking of doing through MTTs and SnGs.

                    150/5.5 = $27.27 in fees
                    Based on 10% fees, Buy-Ins = $272.70
                    Total investment = $299.97

Assuming an ROI of 50% across those tourneys would require an actual investment of $199.98.

Taking 50% of that investment ($99.99) to account for the progressive nature of the investment over the month and based on solid BRM of having 100x buy-in for MTT's and 50x for SnG's a bankroll of $9,999.00 would be required if only MTT's were played or $4,999.50 if only SnG's, the average if equal expenditure on MTT's and SnG's were made would be $7,499.25.

If we crank everything up, lets say we have a very good month and 125% ROI is achieved, the actual investment to gain our 150VPP is $133.32, our BRM is a bit slack we work on 25x for MTT and 10x for SnG, using 50% of the investment again that requires a bankroll of $1,666.50 and $666.60 respectively, the average for equal expenditure being $1,166.55.

Based on the above I'm guessing most will be looking to grind their VPP's on the cash tables.
