  • 5.5$ [1000 CAP] - Defending BB with Q8s vs a min raise

Hi guys, Is it correct to defend here vs a min-raise post-ante with Q8s when we have 22bbs?

    Hi George

Nooooooo! This is one of them spots where I see a lot of players get into trouble. Calling may seem like the correct thing to do because of the immediate price we're getting to see a flop but the fact of the matter is this, we are likely to flop something some of the time and when we do we're going to have to call at least one bet and hope that villain slows down on the turn and when we have only a 22 big blind stack we can find ourselves committing a large % of our stack very quickly, this and the fact that we are going to be forced to play the hand out of position makes it an easy fold preflop in most circumstances.

If you have reads on villain then it can sometimes be in your favour to defend, but as a rule of thumb we ought to be folding. If we're deep in a tournament and we know that villain plays passively post flop then there is an argument for defending with hands like these but as a rule of thumb we ought to be folding them with less than 22bb's and we musn't forget that re shoving it all in is an option too, it's a very high risk option but an option none the less.

    Cheers, Chris.
