  • $0.25 NLHE - 77 in the BB.

This was a new table, so I didn't have a read on anyone. I chose not to raise pre-flop because there were too many players, and I didn't know how many would call. I check-raised the flop in case it connected with someone else. Was this the right way to play it?

Hi Christxof! With 77 in the BB into a family pot, I'm going to check here and try to setmine since I have the stack to do so. The flop gives me middle set and when it's checked to me, I'm going to make a value bet here. I don't want to take a chance at it checking around and having someone outdraw me to the gutshot straight or two pair without making a -EV call to do so. With 4 opps in the hand, I'll bet the size of the pot (150). This will also help to start building a pot to get more chips out of the opps if my hand holds up. By leading out, while I can re-raise if someone does make a raise, I won't have to and can call to see the turn. Check/raising here may lose me value to having my hand look too strong, as it can scare opps out of the hand. I've found that leading will get me more chips on average in the long run from the games that I've played (both online and live). The turn brings a possible flush draw and once again, I'll lead out for 1/2 pot. I need to make this bet both for value and to make sure that the opp is making a -EV play to try to outdraw me. The river should be a blank and here is where a read on the opp would come into play for me. I want to bet whatever I think that the opp will call. If I think they'll call 1/3 pot, 1/2 pot, pot, etc... I'll bet whatever I think they will call. What I don't want to do is to bet too small or too large and have the opp fold, where I'd lose value for my hand. Hope this helps and good luck at the tables.umbup: John (JWK24)
