  • Freerole MTT, Some thoughts on this one

I a hubble freeroll tournament, doing reasonably well until this point then not sure if I made a mess of this or it was just bad luck. As 2c in the hijack position villian_3 limps along with villian_6, I call BB checks so 4 way to the flop. Flop comes Ac Kh 2d as there were no raisers I didn't have anyone ranged with AK so figured my two pair was best hand. Villian_3 bet 100, Villian_6 folded. Not sure what happened with my bet here was sure I hit the 66% button, villian! folds Villian_3 calls. Turn comes a 4s vilian again bets 100 As a 50% bet is about 1/3 of my stack I shove he calls. River comes a 3d, he was holding Ks 5s so had called my flop bet with a pair of kings and my turn shove with a total of 5 outs any king or 3. Question should I have just called his flop and turn bets so preserving my stack or was I right to push this even though I ended up losing my stack?

In response to 'not sure what happened here'. Your raise was 2/3.

Pot was 540, he bet 100 so to raise 2/3 pot you need to call 100 to make the pot 740, and bet a further 488 (740*0.66).

P.s. Freerolls are trash. He bet 1/17 pot on the turn (who does that?!) then called 30 times the bet with second pair bad kicker.

I'm pretty sceptical of what you can learn from playing poker with no monetary commitment from you or your opponent. The same as the crazy all ins you get 4 way on the first hand.

Ah, thats what happens when I have a button to work it out for me lol, no more forgeting the original bet now .

Explains why JWK has been pulling his hair out at my bets I think.

It's easier to work out vs standard bet sizings.

With a half pot bet you need to triple it to raise half pot again. 4x is 3/4 pot, 5x is a pot sized bet.

With a full pot bet you need to bet 4x to raise full pot above it. 3x is 2/3 pot, 2.5x is half pot.

          Hi Webbo62!

This is another one.. MUCK PREFLOP!

          Ace/rag is a trash hand in a multi-way pot.

If I saw the flop (which I absolutely would not), when the opp makes an abnormally small bet, I need to make a standard raise, which for 2 opps in the hand is a 2/3 pot raise to 527.

On the turn, since a standard bet pot-commits me, I need to shove.

When playing freerolls, I need to play extremely tight early in them, as the opps can be playing ATC against me. When I play something marginal or worse than marginal.. I'm going to get beat much more often than I normally would with them due to most pots being multi-way.

The big key here is to muck a bad hand in ace/rag preflop. Just because I have an ace or suited cards does not make a hand playable.

I understand the muck pre flop though thats what got me into trouble here but with that flop and that holding I didn't expect to end up losing to K5.
            .
How do you get 527 for the flop bet should have been 527, I clicked the 66% button and 588 was the bet it gave.

The pot is 640, so 2/3 of this is 427. Add this to the opp's bet of 100 gives me 527, which is what I need to raise to.

Correct way to calculate it is to do 2/3 of the pot after our call is made, not before, and add this to the call amount.

Not sure what the correct way to calculate it is but using the 66% button in the client does give a 588 bet which matches with what Fishwick said.

That way also matches any pot limit game, and the method use in Harrington's cash games book.
