    My $0.02.

Limping surely didn't help here. If you raised from SB maybe it would have pushed him out of the pot or atleast given you an indicator of his range. By allowing him a free call you are opening yourself up to 100% of villains range, and when he starts betting BIG you need to think that he must have hit something BIG, take another look at the board. Remember, he could be holding absolutely anything.

You also checked the flop which gave him another free card. Why not bet? You hit, make him pay to see any more.

It was against the odds to see the straight but I think it could have been averted.

This hand was played very poorly and that's why it was lost.

Preflop, when it folds to me in the SB, I need to raise or fold. With A9, I will raise to 15 cents.

When I flop top pair, I need to make a standard 1/2 pot value bet on the flop. I cannot check.

The reason that this hand was lost was that the BB was given the correct odds in the hand due to the limp preflop and the check on the flop. When the opps get the correct odds, they WILL win chips from us on average each and every time and when we lose due to giving them the correct odds... it's our own fault that we lose.
