Played on a open school league

With AK, I'd make a standard raise preflop, which at this blind level is to 2.5BB+1BB for each limper (1500 chips).

With top pair on the flop, I'd make a standard 1/2 pot value bet when it's checked to me. The same thing on the turn. When the opp checks to me, I need to bet 1/2 pot.

If the opp calls both of these bets, then when they check the river, I'll check behind and go to showdown, as my hand does have showdown value but may not be the best hand.

Apart from the fact you have a hand in this one and gutter draw in the other?

In this hand you are betting for VALUE as you are most likely ahead. In the other hand you would be betting as a Bluff (or semi bluff because you do have gut shot draw).

In simple terms in the open skill league betting for value is good and betting as a bluff is bad.

The difference is that one is a made hand, while the other is not.
