  • Am I missing something?

Playing a $3.50 tournament with a re-buy and add on.

I manage to accumulate 14k in chips.

First bad beat...I have a pair of Q's UTG so raise the blinds which are 150/300. Folded to SB who goes AI with 5k chips.
I call and he has A5 off suit. Wins with a 5 on the flop and also on the river.

Was I right to follow the AI and was it a bad beat?

Second hand...not really a bad beat but more of an idiot call from the Dealer position.

I was UTG +2 with Pocket K's. So I raise 3 x BB. Folded to Dealer who goes all in with 14k. The only hand that was beating me was A's. So I called. Dealer had 8/4 OS!!!!

    Flopped 8, 5, J...Turn 4!!! River...who cares...was not a K!!!

Am I doing something wrong or are they just getting bloody lucky?

You're gonna hear the word variance a lot and this is where it comes into play.

Pre-flop you play it spot on in my view but as you will soon get used to. Not everyone plays the way you think they should and as such you get these suck outs all the time.

Nothing wrong with your play from what i can see.

Don't lose hope it won't happen every time and make notes on the players it happens with so you can pick sweet spots to catch them later on

How many chips were in the pot and what was the raise to, in the first hand.

In the second, same questions. This is necessary info to decide the best play that I can make.

With the Q's I raised to 900 (3 x BB) 450 in the Pot at the time...after my bet 1,350. His AI was about a third of my stack.

With K's I raised again 900 (3 x BB) 450 again...after my bet again 1,350. His AI put me AI also.

In the first hand, the opp is sitting on a perfect re-steal stack size. The hand was well played by both. QQ will lose to A5o about 30% of the time.

The second one, you played correctly (their overbet shove was not good). Unfortunately, KK will lose about 14% of the time here and you hit one of them.

These types of beats are going to happen over and over. What we can't do is to let them affect our decisions.

I am going AI here, no complaints
Not a bad beat, he has about 30% chance to win.. a beat for sure but not a really bad one and one you will see from time to time

UTG +2 is fine to raise with Poket K's but i don't like the x3 raise at these levels (assuming this is the same game and you aren't in early levels still)

x3 will get folded more than it will get called, so in the long-run you might as well be raising x3 anything if all you hope to get is the blinds

I think the call is fine, unless you are playing a tight game and only aggressing vs the smaller stacks (which is a good tactic) then KK is strong here

Opponents will get lucky from time to time, all you need to focus on is making the right play.
85% of the time here, you are ahead, so just chalk that down to 1/15 you are going to suffer.. you have about another 14 of those to come everytime you play KK in that spot but you have another 85 to come where you win..
