    Interesting hand.

Villain seems to be an aggressive player who seems to be hand reading semi competently.

Since he plays these games fairly often, I feel I should start balancing some of my ranges in some spots.

Decided to check A9 on this board as it's so locked down, and if I want to check 88 or 99 etc i should have some AX in my range.

From his perspective it doesn't look like I have an A, so when I bet turn im capped to < trips. Because of this I feel he'll be bluffing a fair bit so I just call the turn.

On the river he bets 1/3 pot. My hand is pretty underepped, and i'd expect any hands that beat me to bet the flop (22, 66) or 3b pre (AT+).

Should I be x/raising river to around ~$21 to rep missed hearts or 44 that I could turn into a bluff? Should I expect to get called by worse?

i dont think you have under repped your hand, u have played it as it is, an ace with a bad kicker trying to pot control, thats how i would see it being the villain, as i would expect a c bet here when its bvb in a non 3bet pot pre when an ace hits the flop.. so right away i would be thinking you have showdown value but dont want a big pot.. i dont think you can count out Ax out of their range, as most people do 3bet pre when bvb with Ax type holdings but this villain has only 3bet bvb 8%.. you could find merit for a raise on the river as they might of not picked up on the flop action as i would of and think that maybe their Jx(suited hearts) maybe best.. but if villain moves all in u def will be beat by sets or better aces, lets face it we are never folding... its just a decision to raise or call the river... and i for one would call, see the villains hand and gain some valuable information and if for that slim chance we are beat we lose the min..

just the thoughts of a beginner

If they are betting 1/3 of the pot on the river, you should raise to a lot less than 21$, to something like 15$ so that you give them room to call us with a pair.
Not sure if we can get value from worse though, that depends on whether villain is likely to hero call that 3bet on the river.
From villains prespective, if they have something worse than you, after your river 3bet they only beat a bluff.
I am really puzzled on the turn action, so I am inclined on calling river.
Then again a lot of worse Ax might play that way.
With that in mind I support the raise path.

NH up until here, would now go ahead and call. Your range looks like you can have a ton of midpairs you may try to valuebet and he can be raising turns with some picked up draws and the occasional slowplays. Would assume his river betting range will be quite polarized so I don't see much value in raising, also since he may not call that off with worse Ax here.

(Disclaimer: Unless you have some good buttonclicking dynamic going on with the guy that is)

FWIW, I usually play this situation exactly the same way (I check-call river), but in BvB I think you can c-bet this and expected to get floated light pretty often. You can probably even get three streets from stubborn pairs. In other positions, your range is narrower, as is villain's continuance range, so c-betting with a bad ace would usually be a mistake, as he won't be calling with worse, but will likely bluff when you check to him.

When you say can we raise the river to rep missed flushes and 44, well how do you get to the river with 44?
