Hi guys, Wondering if I played this overpair right. I keep running into this. Is this just a bad beat, or is this likely to happen quite often? Cheers, Pullin

    Hi Pullin,

Play looks fine to me, except I would bet larger on the turn than 40% pot, probably closer to 60%.

Reads would be helpful obviously, but without any I would presume the SB's range at the point he check-calls the flop is mostly 1 pair hands (top pair, pocket pairs mostly), draws, and the occasional flopped set he's slowplaying. Turn card I would bet/fold... we will get called by worse pairs like 88 and by draws, and if he check-raises the turn we can give him credit for the 7 or a flop slow play (absent reads) and comfortably fold. I would generally value bet the river on most river cards, but this is one that I think checking down is ok as it completes a lot of the draws in his range. Although I personally would probably go for a thin value bet sometimes here of maybe .40-.45c (and fold to a raise), it's thin for sure.

As for your question, I wouldn't call this a bad beat (that usually refers to being way ahead and getting sucked out on, here we were never ahead), but it's a bit of a cooler I guess. You basically ran into the very top of his non-monster range, and the board run out + villains line did nothing to indicate trouble. But no, I do not think this is likely to happen often. Usually I'll expect us to be getting paid by 66/88/99/A3s, getting flushed on the river, or once in a while running into the occasional 2's full type hand.
