  • 2NL - preflop decision with AJ in raised pot

Hi there, this one is about a preflop decision in vacuum against unknows after BTN decides to raise limpers. Raise? Call? or Fold? Raise: we would be changing our hand to a bluff since we cant call a 4bet with it; BUT we could be re-stealing the pot since the raiser could be punishing the limpers wide Call: we will be playing AJ OOP against the BTN who raised limpers. Maybe that's not such a bad option since I'd be calling with it anyways from the SB vs BTN steal.. But perhaps by calling we will induce limpers to call behind. So fit or fold flop??? Fold: mmm? not a very sexy option but perhaps would spare us post flop mistakes?

Hi Geo, Imo this is a pretty clear call, the button may be raising a wide range to isolate the limpers who are likely quite wide themselves. If you flop a pair you will often get paid and win a decent pot. As you say you could raise as a bluff however long term I think there is more value to be gained from playing post flop as there's no guarentee that everyone will fold. Just my thoughts though Oliver umbup:

      Hey Geo

I think actually you have identified one of those spots where all three options have strong merits. Fancy that! Poker is not as easy as say, making a peanut butter sandwich.

Arguments for folding are basically as you point out. We are going to be in the worst position on later streets like the turn. We might have the worst relative position on the flop as well, acting after the initial raiser but with action pending should they continuation bet. Then, should we call, there is the nonzero frequency that the under the gun player limp calls and poof, 11 cents down the drain for nothing the times that happens.

Calling, on the other hand, costs us five and a half big blinds, a price we are hoping to recoup by value betting the limpers worse AX on A high boards and worse JX on J high boards. That is going to happen a decent amount of the time and when it does it will be great, we are going to be bet/folding for the win!

Raising. I like this option. I like making it .35 and having the button deal with it, which they often will, by folding. We are waking up and punishing his punishment with a hand that might have an incentive to see a flop, but not so much that we are forgoing that opportunity by three-betting.

It is close enough that I would say we should call with AJs 100% of the time, and we should call 9 cents with AJo very often. But as the price raises to 11 cents, the amount of money we have to make after the flop rises. At some point it is going to be too high for our hand strength. But our hand definitely has value, we block some strong hands AK/AA/JJ, and the position from which we are three-betting looks strong. Moreover we have suspicions that the raiser is weak, and we have more than suspicion that the limpers are.

I wouldn't mind any way you went. Sometimes poker is like deciding what your girlfriend means by "It's fine" -- no one is ever going to figure it out for sure.

I ended up timing out while thinking it through. (maybe not the best decision from our options).
