  • 5nl Zoom - J7s in the BB. Badly played throughout?

At the time the villain was an unknown single tabler, I had and still have very few hands on him.
Sorry, this hand was deleted by its owner
Pre flop is easy, I don't see any point in raising so just check my option. I flop a FD and backdoor straight draw, I decided to check raise as I felt his betting range consisted of lots of weak hands that would fold to some aggression. I'm not sure if this was the correct play here given that he limped pre and then decided to bet the flop...? OTT I decided to keep up my aggression as I didn't like check folding once I had check raised. However I think my bet sizing was too small and it was perhaps just compounding the mistake of c/r the flop. On the river I don't think I will get many better hands to fold so I decide to check, he checks behind and shows 44 so perhaps I could have got him to fold but oh well. What was the optimal way to play this hand, should I have check called the flop and check folded the turn? Also given my c/r OTF was the turn bet okay? Thanks for any help Oliver umbup:

    Hi Oliver,

I don't follow the flop play really, you felt his betting range was weak so you check-raised, but did you plan this when you checked? Why do you think he's betting a lot of weak hands? He's unknown, other than 1 tabling, you don't have reads so I wouldn't generally assume he's just betting anything when checked to personally.

I actually like leading right at this flop as a semi-bluff. This is a board texture that has probably missed him a great deal, and we can get folds from a lot of hands that have missed like QJ, QT, J9, etc. Ace high may well call once but likely fold to a 2nd barrel. So my preferred line will usually be to bet, and then fire a 2nd barrel quite often if called.

As played I would have bet the river. We can definitely get him to fold better hands like small pairs that didn't quite believe us for some reason, and more specifcally better busted spade draws. Ax of spades, Qx of spades, hands like 65s, it's tough for him to call again with these. If we were up against a station I wouldn't bet because they would call, but then I wouldn't barrel the turn either vs. a station and we don't have reads here anyway. Our line is consistant with top pair or better and I do think we can get a lot of non-king hands to lay down on the river, so go for it when taking this line.
