  • 2 NL ZOOM semi-bluff OOP

No reads on opp except rather big stack (probably better then average player). Preflop I considered better then 3-to-1 odds good enough for a call - not my standard play - usually hate being OOP. On a flop I did a semi-bluff against 2 players, worked 50 %. On a turn I had a choice between check-folding or firing a second bet - and being in aggressive mode I took a shot. Raise made me look for a fold button but then I had realized that min-raise left me with 5-to-1 to call - just about what I needed. On a river I didn't want to spook him away - just checked. Figured him to be on 2 pair min and flush unlikely. Would push be better? Do I need deeper stack to make such plays +EV?

    Hi wwictor,

I think this is just a fold preflop, playing a short stack and out of position with a hand that will often be hard to play well in this situation. 3-1 odds is a bit deceptive, since there is more money left to bet after the flop and you'll be out of position without the initiative.

Semi-bluffing the flop is fine. On the turn you suggested the options where to bet or check-fold, but there's also a 3rd option, check-call... now whether or not you will get a correct price to do this we don't know yet, he may bet big or he may not even bet at all if you check to him. I don't really like firing the 2nd barrel however as once he calls the flop he will have a big ace a lot in this spot, remember he called with another active player still behind him as well. And he's never folding a big ace.

I agree you are priced in to calling the turn min-raise, especially since it seems likely he has at least AQ if not AK or a set, so you rate to get the rest of your stack paid off too when you get there.

On the river I think just jamming is better. The Qd might be sometimes scare him into checking down the river, but with 2 pair+ he his always paying you off if you just shove, so make sure you get paid.
