  • small and medium pocket pairs

hi, im playing 6 max and i dont know how to play them. Should i open from utg and utg+1 with all pocket pairs or only 77+? if i open with them should i call if somebody 3 bets and try to hit set or should i fold? should i ever call a 3 bet with small pairs when its just me and the 3 bettor? calling 3 bet with just one opponent seems like a too big price to pay for a set with 100 bb stacks and players often dont lose all their money with big pairs AA KK .... and finally should i call if somebody openrais from utg and i have small pair when i know he has tight openingrange from utg?

    Hi Villman...

    Welcome to the forum!

I think you might find the live training sessions and the Video archives quite helpful with questions like this. Also, if you have questions about specific hands, we have hand analysis sections for cash game and MTT/SNG play you might want to check out too!

But on to your specific question here...

I really don't think you should "always" do anything in poker; individual situations call for individual decisions.

The more aggro your table, the less likely I'd want to open at all with small pp in EP.

    - You will tend to get 3bet more and be forced to fold before the flop more often

    - When you miss your set, you will likely be forced to check/fold quite often, and check/folding TOO often oop may raise warning signs when you do flop a set and do not fold to a C Bet, thus losing you some implied odds potential of set mining.

The more passive your table, or the more "station-y" your table tends the be, the better I'd like opening with smaller pp in EP.

This depends on the depth of money, and the likelihood the opponent may continue to put money into the pot when you do not "go away" when he bets.

To break even on a call to set mine you'd need 8.5 to 1 return on your invested amount if your set is ALWAYS going to be good; it won't always be good, so you really want more like somewhere between 12 and 15 to 1 potential (at least) to call a 3bet to set mine.

Are you talking on the flop? If so...

You really want to know as much as you can about the opponent's 3bet range, how often the opponent might fire 2 barrels on misses, and how often he might fold on a flop that misses un-paired cards.

This depends on his post flop tendencies, the depth of money, the size of the raise, how many players there are acting after you, and many other situations...

So in short Villman, there are no real "formulae" for use EVERY TIME you have a small pocket pair; you really have to look at each situation in and of itself.

    Hope it helps.

as felix would say (and all the other players) it depends. it depends on the villains, on your reads etc. if you are just beginning that can be very overwhelming. just play tight o you can get your confidense level up. and watch the video's on 6max. also try to attend the live sessions by xflixx. these are for 6max. i do have to warn you though. if you are just beginning with poker it's better to start with fullring. that way the play is less aggro because the blinds go by slower. or if you are like me and find the fullrings boring lol WATCH THE VIDEOS!! felixx's series grinding up through the micro's will be a very good startumbup: gl!
