  • Calling all laptop players using HEM2

    Hi,

Currently thinking of getting laptop to play poker on the go.

However, I have read on the HEM forum that laptops need a SDD hard drive.

Does anyone play on a laptop with a HDD drive of 5400rmp? I am wondering how essential it is to have SDD to run HEM2.

I would hate to buy a laptop with a HDD 5400rpm and it not load properly, etc.

    Thanks,

    pullin

    Hi Pullin,
HEM works fine with a regular hard drive, an SSD speeds things up considerably though but it's not essential.

My laptop isn't old but it's already struggling with HEM2 so while I agree with Ovalman that it isn't essential I m strongly considering either buying an SSD or getting a ready for everything desktop.

The latter being a distant second in the order of preference.

You did mention 5400rpm Pullin but I'm currently using HEM2 and a 7200rpm hard drive. I'm not sure of the drive on my old laptop but it ran fine until my database got big. I then upgraded to a SSD HD which ran fine and then went Kaput and I lost a load of hands.

I built my latest PC to play poker but the 7200 seems to handle everything fine and I think it was the specs of my Laptop and not the hard drive that was the problem. I do plan on getting a SSD but until HEM struggles I'd rather add another monitor first.

I've 500,000 hands in my database BTW.

Did read on a holdemmanager forum that the most important performance tuning is.... The hard drive.
The more RPM the beter and also the read/write speed. I use 5400 RPM disk and indeed it crashes sometimes. Don't know if it's related to the disk tho.

            Cheers guys.

I'm looking for a cheap laptop. I'm out and about quite a bit and so currently don't play poker as often as I would like. Thanks for the advice.

RAM is important too, the bigger the HDDrpm the better, but RAM is very important, for Graphics/Video/Audio(not as important), Multimedia intense Programs.

I have laptot i5 with 5.4krpm HD and 8g ram playing 12tables with HM2 without any trouble. I wouldn't worry about the HD at all. You definitely don't need SSD. You should rather by i5 over i3 then SSD over HDD.

Btw more RPM doesn't nessecary mean faster HD. There are more factors how the HD is fast, not only RPM and RPM is the most marketing one. And 4g ram is also good enough.
