    1st hand i think i should have just folded for a few blind levels.

    the type of game will make a great deal of difference.

    If a PSO game, I'd probably just check my option and see if I can hit a J. If I get a J, great, if not, I'm out of the pot cheap.

    In a cash game, I'd have raised pre... like you did. Then, instead of making a larger than pot bet on the flop, I'd have made a thin value bet..... so that I could get off the hand if someone shoved with a set.
    The flop bet makes it so that you put 1/3 of your stack in... where you're going to be committed to the pot and due to that, I'd make a smaller bet.
