  • QQ first hand in 1$ tourn. buy in

How do you guys read this material, its so messy, do you have a system? and there's a part in this hand history that says, 'magalhaes197: raises 120 to 140' what do they mean by raise from 120 to 140? he didn't make a bet of 120 before?

So my question is did I play the QQ correctly or should I have played it differently?

it says 'raises 120 to 140'. That means that the player raised the original bet (the BB of 20) by 120.. giving a total bet of 140.

With QQ, the optimal situation is to be isolated against one opponent, so that you don't have more than 1 person drawing at an ace, king or lower pair.

If it was up to me, my initial raise would have been slightly larger. Since they raised to 140, I'd have raised to 3X that or 420. When the 3rd person pushes all-in and called by the initial raiser, the only hands I'd be worried about are AA or KK. If I didn't put either of them on AA or KK, it's an automatic call because then they both have a big A or KQ/KJ suited... there are less outs for them to beat you.

You were the favorite to win the hand (45% of the time against those cards), got your chips into the pot as the favorite and the best hand held. That's exactly what you want to do.

Hand #1 of the tourney, so no reads other than $1 buy in. I can't wait to get my stack in here personally.

I agree. I've played enough of these that I'm never folding in this situation during the first 15 minutes of the tournament. So many crazy players, folding QQ+ here will probably be a losing proposition in the long run.

I'm happy enough with the OP's raise preflop as opposed to a larger reraise - he has 5 players round before it gets back to the original raiser and it brings in an element of pot control.

It gives him that little extra wriggle room for post-flop play and a parachute should A, K, single suited flop or completely connected board.

I agree: you would be long-term happy to get it all-in pre-flop but whatever buy-in you are likely to get a lot of loose action first 15 mins.

It depends on what level of exposure you want to play and how early, obviously any hands at this stage your risk profile is tremendous. Couple that with the stack to blind comfort level which is why I would trend towards a post-flop stratagem.

Obviously you have to be ok laying down what you honestly believe is the best hand but that's a style choice. Just my 2¢.
