  • NLHE capped raising

it sometimes occurs that raising is capped when a player in a tournament goes all-in and before him was a raise but the all-in contributer couldnt match the raise somehow and now the third player with aces who wants to rereraise all-in is capped he has to call

i used to know how to exploit this kind of play because you can take advantage of it if you know the right % etc

can someone explain to me these rules where betting/raising is suddenly capped in tournaments?

    Thanks in advance

Hi Prohorse3! The key here is that to re-raise, the prior raise has to be a 'legal' raise. That means that the amount that the player raises when they shove, is equal to or more than the previous raise. Ex: you bet 1k, if I shove, I have to have at least 2k in my stack in order for it to be a legal raise. If not, then you and anyone else can only call. If I have 2k or more, then that re-opens the betting and anyone behind me can then re-raise. Hope this helps and good luck at the tables.umbup: John (JWK24)

yea but there was as i could remember a % rule needed to get raising capped in tournaments

      example:

      PokerStars Hand #93623633665: Tournament #682944641, 5FPP Hold'em No Limit - Level XII (500/1000) - 2013/02/06 23:32:23 CET [2013/02/06 17:32:23 ET]
      Table '682944641 19' 9-max Seat #5 is the button
Seat 1: mr cee 213 (3350 in chips)
Seat 2: zhekavshoke (15375 in chips)
Seat 3: Fadalmir (19250 in chips)
      Seat 4: druz110773 (9425 in chips)
      Seat 5: Prohorse3 (16550 in chips)
      Seat 6: Olsza12 (10311 in chips)
      Seat 7: 1vpolevo1n (4000 in chips)
Seat 8: Mr BRAKBAR (117736 in chips)
      Seat 9: dvis2 (16225 in chips)
mr cee 213: posts the ante 100
      zhekavshoke: posts the ante 100
      Fadalmir: posts the ante 100
      druz110773: posts the ante 100
      Prohorse3: posts the ante 100
      Olsza12: posts the ante 100
      1vpolevo1n: posts the ante 100
Mr BRAKBAR: posts the ante 100
      dvis2: posts the ante 100
      Olsza12: posts small blind 500
      1vpolevo1n: posts big blind 1000
      *** HOLE CARDS ***
      Dealt to Prohorse3 [Js Qc]
      Mr BRAKBAR: folds
      dvis2: calls 1000
      mr cee 213: folds
      zhekavshoke: folds
      Fadalmir: folds
      druz110773: folds
      Prohorse3: raises 2000 to 3000
      Olsza12: folds
      1vpolevo1n: raises 900 to 3900 and is all-in
      dvis2: raises 7100 to 11000

There should have been a way for me to cap this raising knowing the guy will go all-in as hes a donkey

maybe i had to raise to 3500

Hi prohorse3! If you knew this player would raise and you want to be able to re-raise to isolate them, you need to raise to 2450 or less. If you raise to 2450, your raise amount is 1450. Their shove of 3900 would be an exact legal raise amount, which would re-open the betting for you to isolate. Hope this helps.umbup: John (JWK24) The way to look at it. (Their stack - previous bet amount)/2 Anything equal to or lower will re-open betting, if nobody else raises. Anything above it will close it due to there not being a legal raise.

this is still very vague to take in i used to know this stuff and exploit it profitably

If you knew this player would raise and you want to be able to re-raise to isolate them, you need to raise to 2450 or less. If you raise to 2450, your raise amount is 1450. Their shove of 3900 would be an exact legal raise amount, which would re-open the betting for you to isolate.

i did not want to get more then 4000 chips from my stack in the pot preflop so thats why i raised 2000 which leaves him with only 900 to raise yet another player was able to shove his stack in exactly what i did not want

i hope some members can post a hand where raising gets capped in NLHE for me to finnally get it

If a player who is to act after the all-in player has not already acted then they are able to make a raise. If they have already bet and no legal raise has occurred after this bet then they will only be able to call as the action has not technically re-opened.

villian only has 900 left to raise he goes all-in
                  villian 2 Reraises to 11k

In the hand you posted, it doesn't actually matter about the short stack shoving. dvis2 open-limped. You raised his limp, so he still has the option to re-raise you whether someone else is in the pot or not.
There is NOTHING you can do to prevent someone trying the old limp-reraise trick if they have more chips than you, except of course by over-limping. Your raise ALLOWS them to come over the top.
