        Already passed

I have already passed the Poker Basic Course as well as the NLHE Cash Quiz.

        • #5

You've passed the basic test and you'll get your first bonus in the next 24 hours, good job!

          Step Two

The Poker Basics test was easy right? Well, there's a lot more to learn on the road to becoming a profitable poker player.

Now study the Cash Game course and once you think you have it mastered have a go at attempting the quiz. Don't rush through the course, there's a lot of content there and the quiz is tricky so spend some time on this.

Let us know as soon as you have passed the Cash Game Quiz and we will award you with your next buy-in.

          Best of Luck!

Bankroll Builder feedback - AJos - J high pair, board with a straight draw I have AJ off suite without position. On flop, I hit top pair with Ace kicker. Opponent has position on me, and is only calling my bets, no re-raises which suggests he has not hit a straight yet. The tough decision comes before the showdown, board is set for a straight, if I check here and my opponent (who has position on me) re-raises, then even if he has not hit a straight and is trying a bluff, I will most likely have to fold. I made a raise of 4cents vs. 6cents on the turn (showing some weakness), which I think was not the right play. Please let me know what would have been the best approach in this situation from the beginning. Thanks and Best Regards Abhishek.

Hi Abhishek, sorry for the slight delay in getting back to you.

Preflop, AJs is a strong hand, even stronger in a 4-way hand as it is less likely that anybody else has a strong hand. However, you are out of position as you realise, so I definitely think you should raise. However the size you chose is way too small. You're giving your opponents an excellent price to call and outdraw you. You are also not extracting as much value as possible when they call with worse Ax hands.

A normal raise size should be 3x the Big Blind + 1BB for every limper and you could even consider making it slightly bigger because you're out of position. I would raise to at least $0.10 but you could go even higher.

You hit a great flop, top pair top kicker and it is a "dry" flop - meaning there are very few draws that the villains could have. I agree with your decision to bet this flop, but I would make it bigger - the size you chose is too small compared to the size of the pot and isn't going to extract enough value from worse Jx hands or pocket pairs that won't fold to one bet. You should make it something like $0.07-$0.09.

Again on the turn, you should bet something like 1/2 - 2/3 pot for the same reasons as on the flop. You can definitely afford to bet bigger now because both of your opponents have shown an interest in the pot and likely have a worse hand than you.

The river is not the best card, but it is unlikely that villain has too many 3x hands in his range. What might he have called preflop and your flop and turn bets with? J3? 33? 53?, it's not too likely. Strong players have a big weapon in their arsenal called the bet/fold. You bet for value assuming you have the best hand, but fold to a raise. This is the perfect spot to utilise this. You can still get called by worse one pair hands and if you get raise, it's pretty clear that he has you beat, either with two pair or a straight. I would bet something like 1/2 pot or between $0.20-$0.25 and fold to a raise.

I don't know what villain had, but you could likely have doubled your stack in this hand if you would have just bet bigger on every street.
