Hello, this a hand I recently played. Can you tell me if I played the hand well or if I made any mistakes?

Hi worms2d! I'll analyse the hand in post #4.

AJ is good enough to raise in this spot. While I'd go with 3bb on a real money table, a pot-sized raise to 7 chips is fine for play money. It's 4-handed on the flop, and you have a gutshot and 1 overcard on the QT8 flop. I would recommend checking here. While I would make a continuation bet in a heads up situation, I think it's a mistake to bet without a made hand in this multiway pot, because at least one of the villains is bound to call on this board, either with a pair (or better) or a draw. When you just have ace high, but have a draw to the nuts, it's often a good idea to check behind and try and make your hand for free. By betting, all you do is charge yourself for drawing, because you won't get everytone to fold to your semi-bluff.
As played, you bet, and unsurprisingly 2 players call. Fortunately, you improved to top pair on the turn, so now you can bet for value. Now you want all those hands that called on the flop to call again. Your bet size is a bit small on the turn. I'd bet about half pot for value, hoping that Qx and hands like KT/JT will stick around. None of the draws complete on the blank river, so you can make another value bet. Your sizing is good here. You don't want to be too much, as you want to get paid, so I think about half pot is ideal. Well played!

          Hope this helps!
To get more tuition on cash game basics, I recommend going to live training sessions if you can. You can also play alongside other PSO members in the Homegame club. Good luck!

          Cheers,

Brilliant! You've done all 3 tasks and you'll get your first bonus in the next 24 hours, good job! Step Two Use your first buy-in to only play the 1/2 cent real money FULL RING tables on PokerStars. Do not play any other type of game other than this. Post one hand that you had difficulty with here in this thread using the hand replayer and we will analyze it for you. Please watch the following video and answer the question below. List 3 reasons why a player may want to make a big bet? Then study the Cash Game course and once your happy have a go at attempting the quiz. Don't rush through the course, there's a lot of content there and the quiz is tricky so spend some time on this. So you have 3 things to do to earn your next bonus. 1) Play the 1/2 cent Real Money tables and post an interesting hand here in the Forum using the Hand Replayer. 2) Watch the Bet Sizing video and answer the question below it. 3) Study and pass the Cash Game quiz. Let us know as soon as you have all 3 tasks complete and we will award you with your next buy-in. Best of Luck!umbup: John (JWK24)

Hi again worms2d! Let's take a look at the hand in post #9.

Pocket nines is good enough to raise in this spot, but I'm not sure why you only minraised to 4c. Use the standard 3bb open to make it less likely that you'll be called by multiple players. Fortunately, only the blinds call this time, so you're in position, and you got a great flop for 99; an overpair and a gutshot on 865. If it's checked to you, then making a continuation bet for value and protection would be good. Here though, the BB donks into you. When a player donks into the pre-flop raiser, he usually has a weak hand, like one pair or a draw. I think you could sometimes raise here to protect your hand, as the turn could be tricky to play, but calling is fine too. If the opponent has something like 87, then you're ahead, and you can use your position to control the pot size; building it if you think you're ahead, and checking and calling if you're not sure. When the villain checks the turn, his range is unchanged. He doesn't have a 5 or a full house (which would surely keep betting) so he's still on one pair or a draw. I like betting like you did. If he has the straight draw or a pair, you can get value. Your bet is a little large, as it might get the weaker parts of villain's range to fold, but it's OK. I'd usually go with about two thirds of pot on the turn. Villain calls and the river pairs the board again, but you still have an overpair. There's a small chance villain just boated up with a 6 in his hand (a flop donkbet with 76 that had a pair and straight draw would make some sense) but I think he'd usually lead for value with a monster, rather than go for the check-raise. I think villain is genuinely weak now. Mostly he has 8x or a hand like A7s that had a draw that missed. You could try a thin value bet to target the 8x and ace high hands, but checking behind isn't too bad. When you're not sure where you're at, checking behind is a good option. You got two streets of value with your nines here, so that's pretty good. You can't win a big pot every time.

                    Hope this helps!

                    Cheers,
                    Arty
