NB: Bookmark this page so that you'll find it easily in the future

      First Step

Watch the following video and pay special attention to the tips on retrieving and saving your hand history from PokerStars. This will be important for the rest of your promotional journey.

After wacthing this please play some PLAY MONEY FULL-RING (9-Handed) tables at PokerStars and using the Hand Replayer post a hand here in this thread that you have questions about.

Here is a video on how to use the hand replayer.

Then when you have that done please have a go at the Poker Basic Course and pass the quiz at the end of the course.

So you have 3 steps to do to begin with and when you have all 3 done we will award you with your first bonus.

      1) Watch the 'Getting Started' video
      2) Post a 'PLAY MONEY' hand here in the Forum using the Hand Replayer
      3) Pass the Poker Basic course.

Here is my hand to be analysed. I had a good deal but it didn't quite play out as expected. I was surprised that there was so many calls to my sizeable preflop raise and then, when I slowed down with an overcard on the board, didnt expect to then win the hand, with probably a bad call. Should I have played this hand differently? Thanks, Ed ps. I believe I have completed now all 3 steps

Hi edthepleb! With QQ from the SB, I get 2 limps, then an abnormal raise to 100 and a call of the abnormal raise (a standard raise would be to 3BB+1BB for each limper). With QQ here, I'm going to 3-bet and the key is the sizing of the bet. My standard sizing is to between 3X the previous bet (300) and a pot-sized raise (340). When someone has already called the first raise, I tend to go with the upper end of this range, so I will raise to 340. With 4 opps, this flop is a problem, since most-likely one of the opps has a K. In most instances, I'd make a c-bet, but with this many opps and an overcard, I'll check and hope to get a free turn card. An opp now makes an abnormally small bet of 550 (a standard bet for this many opps in the hand would be a pot-sized bet). Now, I need to see if I can call this. I have 2 outs if the opp has a K (most likely they do), so from the rule of 4 and 2, my hand is worth 4% equity to the turn (2 outs times 2% for each out). I need to call 550 into a pot that will be 2815 (19.5%). Since my pot equity is much higher than my hand equity... I absolutely need to fold to this bet as I would expect to LOSE chips on average by calling. I want to put my chips into the pot when I expect to gain chips, not when I expect to lose chips. Hope this helps and good luck at the tables.umbup: John (JWK24)

Brilliant edthepleb! You've done all 3 tasks and you'll get your first bonus in the next 24 hours, good job! Step Two Use your first buy-in to only play the 1/2 cent real money FULL RING tables on PokerStars. Do not play any other type of game other than this. Post one hand that you had difficulty with here in this thread using the hand replayer and we will analyze it for you. Please watch the following video and answer the question below. List 3 reasons why a player may want to make a big bet? Then study the Cash Game course and once your happy have a go at attempting the quiz. Don't rush through the course, there's a lot of content there and the quiz is tricky so spend some time on this. So you have 3 things to do to earn your next bonus. 1) Play the 1/2 cent Real Money tables and post an interesting hand here in the Forum using the Hand Replayer. 2) Watch the Bet Sizing video and answer the question below it. 3) Study and pass the Cash Game quiz. Let us know as soon as you have all 3 tasks complete and we will award you with your next buy-in. Best of Luck!umbup: John (JWK24)

Hi again, I have completed the cash game quiz Here is my latest poker hand. I was short stacked and tried to semi bluff after the flop and ended up losing the rest of my chips :/ 3 reasons: 1. For value when you are holding the nuts/ a strong hand 2. To bluff and make opponents fold good hands 3. As protection against your opponents strong draws. I hope this entitles me to the next bonus Ed

Hi edthepleb! I'll take a look at this hand.

There's not really a lot of analysis to do when you start the hand this short-stacked. I'm not keen on limping in in early position. If a hand is good enough to play, it's good enough to raise. UTG, A5s is not good enough to play, so I'd fold. With a stronger hand, like AQs, AK, or a pocket pair 99+, I'd be happy to make a raise to 3bb (6c) and then I'd go all in on every flop, whether I hit it or not. The reason I'd do that is because I'd be pot-committed once I've put in a third of my stack, and the pot would be a size worth winning. By limping, you invite multiple callers to come in with speculative hands, and they'll usually have position on you. It's harder to beat multiple opponents than just one, which is why it's better to raise pre-flop, not call. If you were in late position, over-limping might work out great if you hit the flop hard, but most of the time you will miss with this hand. When short-stacked, you should stick with pairs and "big cards". A5 is losing to all the better aces, so if you play this hand, you kind of need to hit a straight or flush to be sure of winning.

As played, you limp and there are a couple of callers in MP/LP, and the big blind checks his option. With 3 villains in the pot, it's very likely that one of them has a king, so you have very little "fold equity"; someone is always calling. The overbet is a nice attempt at putting pressure on the villains (it's certainly better than check-calling and losing a few more cents), but you're getting looked up pretty often. You only have 7 outs against top pair, so you're definitely getting your money in bad. Unfortunately, you couldn't suck out here, so lost your stack.

Better luck with the next stage of the promo!
