            Hi dreadlock!

I like the way you played this hand. There are a couple of limpers before you and you're in late position with A9. Although this isn't a super-strong hand, it's usually better than the limpers' hands, so making a raise is good, because you'll often win the pot immediately, or isolate the weak hands. Unfortunately, your raise is called in 3 spots, so your hand might not be best after all.
The flop comes A95, so you made top pair, and the big blind makes a very small bet. I like a raise for value here, as villain's bet looks weak. 100-130 would probably be a good size, because you don't want to make it too big if villain is really weak, because he'll fold and you won't get paid. There's also another player who might have made 2pr or better, so you'll be in a tough spot if you get re-raised. The button makes another raise. This indicates he has a monster hand. Since you only have one pair (even top pair) it's a good idea to fold here, so you made a good laydown.
It turns out that you did indeed have the best hand pre-flop, so your raise there was great, but you got outflopped by a worse ace that made two pairs. The BB also turned two pairs. You saved some chips here, because you would have had the worst hand if you'd gone to showdown.
The plays you made here should work well in real money games. My usual plan is to bet and raise (like you did) when I think I have the best hand, but if a villain raises to indicate he has me beat then I'll lay it down. Nice hand, well played!

            Cheers,
            Arty

Excellent! You've done all 3 tasks and you'll get your first bonus in the next 24 hours, good job! Step Two Use your first buy-in to only play the 1/2 cent real money FULL RING tables on PokerStars. Do not play any other type of game other than this. Post one hand that you had difficulty with here in this thread using the hand replayer and we will analyze it for you. Please watch the following video and answer the question below. List 3 reasons why a player may want to make a big bet? Then study the Cash Game Course and once your happy have a go at attempting the quiz. Don't rush through the course, there's a lot of content there and the quiz is tricky so spend some time on this. So you have 3 things to do to earn your next bonus. 1) Play the 1/2 cent Real Money tables and post an interesting hand here in the Forum using the Hand Replayer. 2) Watch the Bet Sizing video and answer the question below it. 3) Study and pass the Cash Game quiz. Let us know as soon as you have all 3 tasks complete and we will award you with your next buy-in. Best of Luck! umbup:

Before I look at this hand, I want to quote something you said.

This is a misundertanding of how we make money. When we bet and raise, we should WELCOME calls from worse hands and draws. That's how we get value for our better hands.

There seems to be a problem with the hand replayer on your AT hand. Another hand I looked at last night had the same problem: the bets and pot size aren't showing, which makes it difficult to analyse your play.

It looks like you ran into a standard cooler, where even the best players would have trouble getting away, but could you try posting it again?

Thanks for sorting that out, Raiser. I'll do the analysis now.

There's a minraise in early position, a call in late position, and you have AT in the big blind. This is a good spot to just call. AT can be somewhat troublesome, as it's dominated by bigger aces, but with this cheap price I think it's OK to see a flop. You probably don't want to build a big pot with this hand, unless you have the nuts, because you're out of position, and that can make it hard to get action from worse.
You call and the flop comes KT8. This isn't a great flop for you, but you have some equity with your middle pair, top kicker. Checking to the pre-flop raiser is good. He bets just under half pot. When the other villain calls, it's easy to also call, because you have a good price. If you don't improve on the turn, though, it will be advisable to give up if the aggressor keeps betting.
The turn bring another 10, so you make trips. You check here and villain only bets 10c into 31c. To me, this looks like a scared bet. I think villain just has a king or a draw most of the time. When the action comes back to you, I definitely like raising for value and your sizing is pretty good. It's not so much that villain will fold, but also big enough to make you some good money. I think villain will grudgingly call the extra 30c with Kx and certainly with strong draws like flush draws and QJ.
Somewhat shockingly, villain comes over the top with a BIG re-raise to $1.64. Suddenly it seems he's not so weak after all. His small bet on the turn might have been his attempt to trap you. If he has pocket 8s, 10s or kings, you're drawing slim, if not dead. KT also has you in bad shape, with just 3 outs. It certainly seems that this 10 improved his hand. It's just unclear if villain would bet this much with a worse 10. I think he'd more likely just call your raise with QT or JT, because those hands also have a straight draw. I suppose he might be going crazy with a flush draw, with something like AcJc, but most of the time I think you're beat.
It's very hard to fold trips with an ace kicker, but there aren't many hands you beat on this board, when villain has made it clear he thinks he's best. I don't blame you for calling all in here, because many players would be trapped here too. You've invested so much of your stack that it would be a mistake to fold when there are some hands you beat and might also be chopping. (Another AT would be likely to shove the turn).
I think you just got unlucky here. Villain played his hand in a way that was quite deceptive, and you made a very strong, but second best hand.

Better luck with the next stage of the promo!

                            Cheers,
                            Arty
