Hi loydca! With J8s from the BB, there are 4 limps in front of me. Since my hand is not strong enough to raise with, I'll check and see a free flop. I flop the nut straight, but there is a possible flush draw. When it's checked to me, due to the large number of opps, I'll make a pot-sized bet of 50 here. This way I can try to protect my hand against any opp that is drawing to diamonds. Everyone stays and the turn is the A of diamonds. Now, I'm in a real sitcky sitaution, as anyone that was drawing to the flush has be crushed. I'm going to make one last attempt to try to get some of the opps to fold (and to try to get info to see if anyone already has the flush) by making another pot-sized bet here. However, this is a big problem, as it's 3/4 of my chips. Unfortunately, due to this, I only have one play left and that is to shove the turn and hope nobody has the flush. I'd like to just make a pot, then re-evaluate on the river. One reason that I don't want to check the turn is that if any of the opps bet, I will have absolutely no clue whether I'm ahead or behind. If I'm ahead, obviously, I want to call. If I'm behind, I want to fold. I'm much happier with making the bet and putting the pressure of having to call on the opps, instead of that pressure being on me. Hope this helps and good luck at the tables.umbup: John (JWK24)

Hi loydca! I'll take a look at this A9s hand for you. Here, you have in early position and there is a limp by the UTG player. If I'm playing this hand, I'm not going to limp along, because calling pre-flop only gives you one way to win the hand, and that's by hitting the board and going to showdown. A stronger play is to raise pre-flop, as this will often mean that everyone folds and you take down the pot without a fight. Raising also increases your chance of winning the hand if you see a flop, because you are entitled to make a continuation bet on the flop, which will put pressure on your opponents. I think A9s is a little too weak to play in early position, however, because there are several players still to act, and at least one of them will have a better hand than yours almost always. I'd prefer to have AJs, KQs or a decent pocket pair in this seat. Without a very strong hand, I'd recommend folding here. If you decide to play the hand, then a standard raise would be appropriate. This would be 3bb + 1bb per limper, making it 4bb or 8c in this particular spot. As played, you over-limp and 3 players see a flop. You actually have position here, which always helps, as you get to see how the other players act on each street. The flop is T87 with a flush draw, so you have an open-ended straight draw (OESD) and an overcard. This is a pretty good draw, but you have to be worried about the spades on the board. You could hit a jack or a 6, but if it's a spade, you'd still lose to a flush. Villain bets 6c into 8c, and I think it's fine to call in position with your draw. The big blind also calls, so you see the turn 3-ways. The Q doesn't help you, but villain doesn't bet, so it seems he just has a hand like a pair of 10s. I'd sometimes bet here as a semi-bluff, hoping to take the pot down, but you are also in position, so can take a free card. You probably don't want to hit a jack on the river, because although you'd make a straight, it would be the "idiot end" of it, as someone with K9 would have you crushed. The river is perfect for you. The offsuit 6 makes your straight. Unfortunately, it's going to be hard to get paid off here, because there are so many connected cards on the board. Anyone that bets here has a straight of some sort. Nevertheless, I like your small bet here, as if villain has one pair or even two pairs he'll sometimes making a crying call, hoping you're using your position to bluff at this orphan pot. Villain folds to your small bet, so he either had nothing, or he's good enough to realise that his hand is beaten by any 9. So post-flop you played this fine. Your only mistake was pre-flop. Don't limp. It's a weak play that does not have a positive expectation in the long run. If your hand is strong enough to play (and this one probably wasn't in your particular position) then it's good enough to raise. Hope this helps! Cheers, Arty

1)to put a lot of pressure on opponents
2)to bluff people of decent hand
                          3)to protect against strong hand.

                          Thanks
