  • Ed's 'Escape from the Open League' Thread

Well - it looks like I am going to have to play the Open Skill League in January 2012 - with the main objective of qualifying back into the Premier League and hopefully also taking a prize.

I have my (now unrequired) 150+VPPs - I'll use them to watch the training vids instead - and I have had a few practice runs in the Open at the end of this month.

    So my goals in PSO Open Skill League for January are;

Average 2-3 tourneys per day - target for month 60-90 tourneys.

Minimum of top 500 finish - promotion to PL and $5

Pretty simple, but it will require a fair bit of retro- adjustments.

I have just registered for another practice game - the 10pm WET that starts in ten minutes.

Target is top 20% or better.

    Good luck all

Practice game at PSO Open Skill League Tourney - 30/12/2011 22:00 WET

      10,000 starters

      10 mins in 6,800 left - running 3,390th 1,460 chips

so far only hands of note an AKoff and a 44 - both pre-flop folds at this stage

AQoff in the BB (60) four limpers (60each) then a raise to 720 - fold

A5 suited in SB folded to a shove

18 minutes in half field have busted

      20 mins in running 3,160 of 4,160 1,360 chips

Note how absolute position is still improving despite no hands being played, although relative position in remaining field is dropping

Through the 3rd set of blinds have dropped to 3,197 of 3,898 1,210 chips left

      30 minutes in running 2,715 of 3,483 - 1,210 chips

antes kicking in at level 5 120bb/60sb/10 ante I have 1,200 before blinds hit

see my first flop in the BB with 6-3 offsuit - NICE HAND....

36 mins in - through the blinds again - running 2,469 of 2,939

for an averagely placed player in the league we are moving into the +ve points zone, the top third

      40 mins in running 2,218 of 2,730 - 950 chips - blinds 80/160

      looks like shove/foldmode right?

well yes - but only with premium hands

see a 2nd flop in BB with A8 suited - flop misses - fold to bet

through the blinds again - SB busted so I missed a small blind cost - another small edge

      now 2,160 of 2,503 735 with chips

50 mins in - through the blinds again

      1,866 of 2,024 - 280 chips

so card dead in middle stages - best hands were ace rags and Kx - no hands played except free flops - no stack left - I will be blinded/ anted out in next orbit

but into the top 20% before the first break

      1st break I have 180 chips left - 2 hands until I blind out

      position 1,619 of 1,691

      top 17%

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 50 hands and saw flop:
      - 2 out of 6 times while in big blind (33%)
      - 0 out of 4 times while in small blind (0%)
      - 0 out of 40 times in other positions (0%)
      - a total of 2 out of 50 (4%)
      Pots won at showdown - 0 of 0 (0%)
Pots won without showdown - 0

rinse and repeat for Open Skill League Points

        Exit hand from practice game
Sorry, this hand was deleted by its owner
Now - you will win a reasonable proportion of these all-in on the last blind and make a few extra places However, for zero hands won During current Hold'em session you were dealt 52 hands and saw flop: - 3 out of 7 times while in big blind (42%) - 0 out of 4 times while in small blind (0%) - 0 out of 41 times in other positions (0%) - a total of 3 out of 52 (5%) Pots won at showdown - 0 of 1 (0%) Pots won without showdown - 0 1,670th of 10,000 will get you points at no risk - you just need to play a large number of games to add the points up over the month, and when you get good playable hands take advantage. We'll see how it works in real game situations in January Ed from Edinburgh - EdinFreeMan

Just about a typical Open Skill League game when the cards are dead. With the right strategy, you can make the points without ever winning a hand. I assume you using the clock to your advantage? You can see 15-20 players bust out just by waiting out your 10 seconds every time.

I am stuck in the Open League - just not enough time to grind out 2-3 tourneys a day. Maybe we'll meet on the tables.

                  Good Luck to you.

You don't need to grind out 3 tables a day - I've been doing very well with 30 games a month.

I did have a pretty good start this month, but you can be ITM with just 30 or so games. You can't win the big prize this way, but you can stay ITM.

                          Hope this helps.

It is normal to blinded out in Open Skill League but keep in mind the bubble is 1441/10000 players and once your on positive points you can take some risk but don't shove just limp and use the clock to the maximum so even you gonna fold your hand you improve your position.1010+ hand need to limp sometimes in order others to limp in and shove at the flop with if no over card.

remember that once in a positive points it's better to double up to get better points when your 5BB or less. I normally shove in BB with Ax and i got lucky most of the time

Phase One Completed - Into the 'Promotion Zone' Couldn't really have hoped for a better run 1st game of the month. Got dealt premium pairs at the crucial times and they held. Folded one QQ hand preflop early doors. The first hand I played was at the 1,350 bubble (Tourney was not quite full to max) QQ in the BB - I could have seen flop for free but as I had no fold equity I knew all the opponentss would call my all in preflop - giving me the biggest potential main pot if I hold. If I check then fold post flop I would blind out in 2-3 hands anyway. Next big hand arrives in the BB again, very next orbit - a simple call Seeing a free flop in the BB I pick up 2 pairs versus a flush draw 85th hand I get the Aces all in and I'm set up for a nice finish Close to blinding out, pick up pocket nines UTG - would blind out next hand or 2. Hard to believe my shove of 440 chips doesn't get more calls. Luckily I dominate the BB. That got me into the top 150 and gave me enough chips for one more orbit. All in UTG before the next BB hits with suited connectors - hoping 'any 2 cards can win' shows up for me. The miracle happens, and very next hand I get a monster. As we all know - monsters can be slain. That's why I don't play them first half hour or so in PSO Open Skill League tournaments. During current Hold'em session you were dealt 121 hands and saw flop: - 8 out of 15 times while in big blind (53%) - 1 out of 14 times while in small blind (7%) - 2 out of 92 times in other positions (2%) - a total of 11 out of 121 (9%) Pots won at showdown - 6 of 7 (85%) Pots won without showdown - 0 Overall very happy - lasted almost 3 hrs, finished 135th of 9,445 - plenty of points on the board and hopefully more to come later. Now I'm off to Happy Hour to try to get some VPPs. Good luck all Ed from Edinburgh - EdinFreeMan

Great start. Just keep doing it and slowly your will have a buffer points to shoot for higher ranks but if does not happen just go back to orignal to play safe not to miss the Premiere Ticket.

Just do the 20VPP now and once your sure you can get the Premiere ticket in the last few days you can play big buy-in or more games to get the 150VPP for maximum pay out.

                              Good luck
