  • My First Win!

I just returned from a long weekend in Las Vegas where I recorded my first tourney victory, winning almost $2500 in Saturday night's NLHE tourney at the Sahara (148 entries). I've made some final tables before, including a second place at Pechanga this past fall, but never actually won a live tournament. I won't bore people with the details, but will say that I built up from a small stack to being one of the chip leaders going into the final table by beating up on people as the bubble approached. When I got to the final table, I continued to play aggressively and held more than 25% of the chips in play by the time the first player busted out. By the time we were six handed, I held half the chips.

Winning was a big thrill to me and I was glad to have two of my best friends on-hand to witness it and celebrate with me after. The rest of the trip was fun, also. I managed a money finish at the Friday Noon tourney at the Plaza (3rd place, winning $270). I also played in three tourneys where I was a "contributor" and broke even over three hours of ring play.

Here's a few notes on the Vegas poker scene:

    - Poker is now huge downtown. The Plaza has four tourneys a day (Noon, 4pm, 8pm, and midnight) and all have VERY reasonable structures for a low buy-in ($60). I didn't play at either the Golden Nugget or Binion's Horseshoe, but they also have multiple daily tournaments, including a 2am tourney (yes, that's 2:00 in the morning) at the Horseshoe.

    - The Luxor continues to draw some of the worst poker players in the world at low limits. They are really awful. I wish I had more time (I only played there for a few hours on this trip) to play there.

    - The Sahara now has two nightly tournaments - 7pm and 11pm. The 7pm tourney regularly draws over 100 entrants and also has a very reasonable structure for a relatively small buy-in ($42, with an optional $20 re-buy).

By the time my Vegas weekend was over, I was actually tired of playing tournament poker. I guess that five tournaments in three days is enough.

 Didn't realize that an LV casino would let you take your dog and cat inside with you. Heartiest congratulations on a great weekend. Beats sitting around SoCal getting rain, rain, and more rain.

WTG Shaky!!! That's awesome. You are truly a tough competitor on the virtual or brick and mortar felt.

Could you go into a bit more detail about the "bad" players a the "low limit" ring games at teh Luxor. How bad, and what specific limits and games did you observe?

I want to thank everyone for their kind words. I owe so much to PSO and all of you who have taught me so much about poker.

I played 2/4 HE at the Luxor for only a few hours (too much time playing tourneys). But based on this trip - and a visit this past fall - I've found very bad players at this casino. At my table, there were at least two guys who were significantly above the legal limit for blood alcohol and three other guys who barely understood the game. This was a 2/4 table, so it's not unusual to find some people who aren't experienced players, but this was above and beyond that. It was also consistent with a prior visit. As far as I know, they don't spread any high limit games (I think the highest game is 4/8 HE).
