  • Las Vegas for the first-timer..Hints and Tips please

    Hi all,

I have been looking at going to Las Vegas for about a 5 day trip.

I see NASCAR is normally on around March, and think it may be good to base the trip around that if the Flights and Accommodation are not excessively high at that time.

I have looked at flights, I can go direct which is about 10hrs from the UK, for about £750 ish, or £200 cheaper but indirect flights ...but I think I will do the direct.

As I will be going on my own, trying to find a cheapy hotel that does reasonable Single Occ. rates was a bit of work, but I found this one http://www.excalibur.com/ that sounds like it is near the action, and would be fine for me.

I don't really know too much apart from there is a fruit machine every yard, and I'm not too keen on burgers ribs steak (although one steak is good!), so hoping that the will be plenty of varied food.

I found a website that lists the Casino Tourneys, which range from say $40-$80 entry fee....

And that's about it........does anyone have anything to add? I don't really know what to expect, is it anything like Bognor on a sunny Saturday afternoon?

    Weasel,

The best time to go is when nothing else is going on. No big conventions, fights, concerts, nascar. When those big events are happening, the room rates and flights go considerably up. It will still be busy, but won't cost as much.

Excalibur is cheap, but you can do better for your $$ at other hotel/casinos that are on the strip. Normally, the hotel deals only come out 2-3 months ahead, so wait on the hotel until then as you'll save a bunch there. When you get your time frame narrowed some, send me a PM and I'd be happy to look and see if I see any deals that I can recommend. I'm normally pretty good at finding the better deals.

I go to one of the good steakhouses every year when I go. For a great steak at a reasonable price, I'd recommend Strip House in Planet Hollywood or Tender in Luxor. For buffets, the best three are Bellagio, Wynn and Caesars Palace, especially the Bellagio special Fri/Sat night dinner one. It's more expensive, but well worth it.

Thanks John, I will probably take you up on that offer of an accom search.umbup: Nascar isn't a priority, so I will put a line through that .

Stayed at Ballys second half of trip this June, that fitted the cheap and close to action goal.

A buffet has to be done, John's are solid best buffet recommendations, The Rio is a good alternative, Monte Carlo for breakfast buffet is meant to be good. There are some cheap food alternatives, eg Ellis Island, Peppermill Lounge, Grand Lux Café.

I would play the cheap cash games rather than the cheap tournaments, you will probably find the rake is at least 25% on the tourneys.

Meant to be working now, let me know if you want to know anything further. There are quite a few of us who have been this year, who should be able to help.

Sign up for a player's card at the casino first.

Many thanks Weasel and Brian. I had enough points won from Virgin before to go but I let them expire Sad thing was I could have exchanged the points for around £700 but instead chose to keep them as airmiles. I will get there some day but I'd love to do the other things and not just play poker.

It's like a bonus system to keep you playing at the same place but there are some that use it to get as much back as they spend. One guy on a rival podcast played a machine for a few hours but was rewarded with a poker token which he knew was +EV for him.

Like any reward scheme, if you play the reward system right you can benefit much more than it was intended.

Between my mom, sister and me, we had 2 rooms at Aria for 2 nights, buffet for each, two other dining credits at other places, Zarkana tix... it's well worth it, as everything added up, we got over $1k of stuff free.
