  • Cardplayer Cruise Part 2

Row row row and back to the trip report. On Thursday we docked in Puerto Vallarta. We had a preplanned excusion to one of the big resorts. They gave us lunch and use of the pool and beach for the day.

Thursday night was dinner, show and early to bed. Three days scurrying around Mexican ports in the hot sun knocked us out.

Friday morning was the $230 entry fee Omaha tournament. I had actually entered this following a PSO win in this game. However after going to Ken Lambert's (cardplayer cruise partner and semi pro Omaha player) seminar on Omaha it dawned on me that my thought processes while playing Omaha are not even close to what the good players are thinking. I refunded out and I think this was a smart move. There were at least a dozen Omaha specialists in the group and I remembered what Barry has said so many times about game selection.

I did play alot of 4/8 Friday during the day and evening. My cards started to move from putrid to almost average and I recouped some of my losses.

Saturday morning was the $230 entry fee NL tournament. We started at 10:00 am with $1000 TC. Nothing came my way for the entire first hour and I started hour two with about $850 TC. I raised and made it $100 to go on the button with AJ. The BB reraised me $300 and I laid it down. I had him pegged as a bully and he had me pegged as a tight conservative player. Ten minutes later I found 99 on the button with no one in before me. Blinds were 50/100 and I made it $250 to go. Mr. Bully came over the top all in. Ya know you can only get sand kicked in your face for so long. I felt that I needed to take a coin flip with him now or he would essentially handcuff me the rest of the tournament. ( to say nothing of giving up 1/3 of my chips with the blinds rising) I only had to worry about a larger pair. I thought for a couple of minutes and then stared at him. He wasnt moving or breathing and he couldnt look at me. I called and was pleased to find my read was correct. He turned over AJ. I wasn't as pleased when he flopped a jack.
IGTTLN (I go to the lifeboats now)

I played a little more 4/8 on Saturday and took the last night off opting for dinner and the show with my wife.

Ratings with 1 the lowest and 10 the highest:

    Royal Carribean 5
    Food 4
    Entertainment 8
    Shore excursions 6
    Senor Frogs 9
    Cardplayer staff 10
    Cardplayer dealers 10
Poker room 8 (about 10% of the chairs were cheap plastic and it was like musical chairs trying not to get stuck with one.
Cardplayer players 6 ( a few were friendly but as a group they couldn't hold a candle to the PSO crowd.

Would I go again. Perhaps. They have an Alaskan cruise on Holland America sometime next year.
