  • HPT Detroit

On 6-4 I was off to Detroit to play the HPT event. Made a quick stop to visit with Gary, "bgdgg101" before going on to Detroit.

Once I arrived I decided to buy-in to the qualifyer for $340, but still wanted to get a feel of the place, so decided to play an $80 sat. with the top two get entry into the qualifyer.

I was lucky enough to win a seat, so I now have a back-up in case I don't make it the first try.

The qualifyer starts with 10K in chips and 30 minute rounds....a very nice structure for this type of qualifyer.

I played the first qualifyer Thursday morning with no luck, so was glad I had a back-up. The evening qualifyer went much better as the top 20% win a seat to the main event. When we got down near the bubble I had over 80K and was folding every hand untill the short stack was blinded in. I called with K-5 and with both cards hitting the flop the short stack was done. Everyone shakes my hand and congrats each other for making the main event.

The main event is set up something like the WSOP Main event with three different starting groups.....A, B, & C.

Group A played on friday night, with B & C playing on Saturday. I wanted to play on friday so I could play PSO on saturday, knowing I was going to win a WSOP seat. lol That didn't happen, due to my fingers being faster than my brain.

The Main event went as well as one can expect I guess. Each group played 12 levels, and than bagged up their chips just like in a WSOP event. At bag up time I had 64K which was about avg. for the tournament.

Sunday morning, all three goups played their day two, and with about 107 starting day two & 48 making the money, I felt good about my chances.

The table I drew had several small stacks, and everyone was going all in from the start. When a small stack busted they brought in a monster stack to replace. I never really got much in the way of cards, but just enough to hold my own stack wise for two plus hours.

With the blinds 7k & 14k and a 1k ante, the player on my right raised to 30k. I had Q-T of clubs and thought it was now or never with the blinds coming to me in two hands. I put in my last 34K and everyone else folded but the first raiser. He turns over A-J and with the flop of KK9 I had outs that never came, so my HPT event is over. I busted out about 59th about 11 from the money. I shake everyones hand & wish them well.

The Greektown Casino, has set up their poker room for the HPT events. All tables have the HPT label on the table, with HPT poker cards, along with an HPT dealer button. They even had my 2' by 3' picture posted as you enter the Casino as well posted several places around the Casino along with other winners. Everyone wanted to know how much I had won & when.

It got a little crazy at times. One player said, I played with you before at some Casino I never heard of. I said no, never been there, so he named another Casino and I said no again. Another player at the table said, " he's been on TV all week-end" and the other player says, "thats were I seen you". The whole table has a big laugh! I even signed an autograph or two.

I know with all the good players here at PSO, this is going to happen to several of you. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as this old sailor has.

It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy and great poker player!! I grew up in Dearborn just outside of Detroit and I love Greek Town. Wow, our very own PSO Poker Celebrity how cool is that!

Damn, I know I have played with the guy on TV somewhere before!

I was fun watching you on TV Leon. I almost went up to Detroit for the HPT but I let work interfere! I did see Dave in Chicago, Monday, however.
