  • Trip to the Commerce

Just in case someone is going to be in L.A. ...
I just returned from a trip to Los Angeles. I was out there for a psychology conference on the University's dime. "Unfortunately" the conference hotel was booked full, so I was forced to stay at the Crown Plaza Hotel conveniently attached to the Commerce Casino.

Overall the trip was great. I have had intentions of going to L.A. for a while, to try some of my killer stand-up, but unfortunately I never got out of the poker room.

The $100 buy-in NLH game at the Commerce is fantastic. I have never played in such a soft game. And there is definitely no need for any sort of "trickeration." I saw a very tight gentleman raise the $3 blind to $30 UTG with AA and get called by two players, one with 88 and one with QJo. If you slow play a hand at the Commerce you are in trouble.

    Unfortunately, I can't say I came home a big winner :
I ran my bank up pretty good until the final night I was there and The infamous L.A. massacre went down. After losing three rather sizable pots to 2 two outers on the river and a runner runner straight I had to go back up to my room and drown my sorrows in the TBS version of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Running Man. That Richard Dawson is something else. 8)

For the comp hounds out there, I'm not really sure what you can swing in the low limit room. I did manage to finagle a limo ride back to the airport, though. Just slip a floor person a 10 spot, and he'll have that Caddy swing around front ASAP. Nothing beats the fake high roller lifestyle.

For the star struck folks out there, James Woods was over in the high limit room. I always cut through there in an attempt to pump myself up before my sessions. Friday night as I walked through the room some guy with gray hair was giving me the stink eye. It turns out it was ole' Jimmy Woods. I'm not sure why he was staring at me, of course he was probably thinking the same thing about me.

The following pros were there throughout my stay: Phil Laak, Can Kim Hua, and Tuan Lee. I happened to be passing the table Tuan Lee was about to sit down at, and another player was complaining about his presence. Tuan said he would only stay for 45 minutes, so the other player pulled out his cell phone and said "ok, but you better be gone by 3:45." Good times.

Well, before this thing gets any longer I better get to class. If anyone has any questions about the place post them here, and I will try to get back to them.

    Have fun,

Hi Jack..( be sure and don't say that on an airplane...)

I LOVE the $100 buy in NLHE game at the Commerce. Last time I was there, February, they had about 14-15 tables going, and I never had a losing session!

Speaking of "star gazing", every time I am there, I walk over to the high limit room, and always see Toby McGuire and his bodyguards. And I have also played in the baby no limit game with Cory Lidle, who pitches for the Phillies. He is a great guy, and renews my faith in the over-paid athletes. I played against/with him in Oct. when the Phillies were not in post season, and again in Feb. right before he left for spring training!

As to comps, I have never had a food comp there, but the prices on their table-side menus are so good that I always feel I get a good deal, and the food is excellent. The Asian food is just very good, and the portions are obscene.

I have always called before hand and lined up a limo/shuttlevan from LAX, and they have always been very cordial. A nice tip to the driver and everyone is happy.

Anyone who wants to get their feet wet in a NL ring game, I highly suggest this location.

Thanks for posting, it made me very anxious for August!
