  • An American Challenge open to all

    As an American player, I'm unable to play the cash games. However, that doesn't stop me from playing poker. To keep my skills, what skills I have, sharp, I play the 27-player sit-and-go games for $300 + $20 in the play money section. I'm also playing these like the Battle of the Planets, which means I'm going for the maximum number of points for each "orbit" of twenty games.

    That defines what I'm doing. Now I'll issue my American Challenge. Join me in this competition by playing in the 27-player games. The objective is to see how many orbits you can do with a score greater than 425 points. I chose this point count since anything over this will normally place you in the top one hundred on the Mercury list, which means an additional cash bonus.

    This challenge is open to everyone, but I'm hoping the Americans accept it since these are the only games available.

    Unlike the Battle of the Planets, which has a one-week time limit, there is no such limit on this challenge. If you can do your orbits in the one-week period, great. If it takes you longer, no big deal. Remember that the objective is to maximize your points per orbit.

    Scoring:
    1 = 80 points
    2 = 58 points
    3 = 38 points
    4 = 22 points
    5 = 18 points

    You will find out that a score of 176 points will earn enough in play money to cover the $6,400 cost. To minimize the number of postings, I ask that anyone accepting this challenge list their results whenever they finish a minimum of five orbits.

    To date, I'm just starting Orbit Number 54. In keeping with the challenge limitations noted above, I'll wait until Orbit Number 60 is done to update my results for Orbits 51 through 60. I'll post Orbits 1 through 50 at a later date since it will take time typing in the numbers.

  • #2
    My orbit scoring will be given in the following manner:

    Orbit numbers (in bold)
    First place - reading down
    Second place
    Third place
    Fourth place
    Fifth place
    Out of the money
    Points (Blue = over 425 --- Red = lost money)

    I'll update whenever I can until the first fifty orbits are listed here so they are all in one place.

    The best part is that I make the money around 35% of the time. I'm betting if somebody can consistently reach the money 45% of the time, they would reach the top one hundred on the Mercury Division.

    And before anyone tells me, I do know the cash game results would differ. However, Americans cannot play here for cash, which is why I issued this play money challenge.

        Yeah I think I may take a whirl with this myself Cairn.

        Outside if the Tank and a pop or 2 into Kitty's Penthouse (gotta remember to reg. for that more,WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE) I had really been avoiding any play money games like the plague.

        But in the last few days I decided to start playing the 300+20 45 mans (would that they had 90 mans as well...) just to keep my hand in. Been running around 37% (22/59 ITM) and were it real money my line would look damn good----22/59 ITM $14.75 in (basing it on the .25 prize payouts) $31.08 won $16.33 profit +110.71% ROI

        In my opinion these play at probably 70-75% the competency of the real money .25 45 man SNG's (THAT'S how bad mini-micro players typically are peeps...) and after the first 2 blind levels (which are insanely maniacal) they calm down enough that if you were to watch one of the play money games and a real money .25 45 man at the same time and not know which is which you would have a hard time distinguishing the two IMO.

        So whilst the stats are inflated I played enough real money .25 45 mans (and was successful enough in them) to know that these play money ones are close enough to be worth it for some practice.

        And despite Allen Iverson's opinion on the subject you practice like you play I think. Or as an opposing general once said of the Roman Army---

        "Their drills are like bloodless battles and their battles are like bloody drills".

        Never tried the BOP orbits in real money but is was something that piqued my interest for when I got to those levels. May as well give it an ersatz try in play money.

        Good idea here Hedgehog.

          Two points I would like to make.

          1 ---- 45 players

          If the guidelines for the Battle of the Planets included a 45-player level, I would be doing those games instead. As to why I chose 27-player, it was for the points. These games have the opportunity of earning the maximum points allowed, which is 80.

          2 ---- Microstakes

          Now that is some great news. Other members have called me a fool for promoting play money games, but now your experiences have given me ammunition. So these 45-player games will run similar to the 25¢ micro tourneys for 45 players? That's great news. It means these play money tourneys have a purpose.

          And on a personal note:
          I always avoided the micro games since I couldn't earn the VPPS. Figured if I was going to invest the time, I should see something as a "guaranteed" return if I lost the money.

              Yeah Cairn I would stand by that comparison---roughly 70-75% the competency level of the .25 45 man games. And the biggest difference is really in the first 2 blind levels,they tend to be complete Hubble's like donk it off with ATC shovefests. I've laid down AKs,QQ,JJ,1010 and the like a few times already and been glad I did almost every time.

              After that it's a lot like the .25 45 mans---a couple good players (and yeah I count myself in this group) a few ok/mediocre players and the rest are the remainders of the drool bucket brigade. Been KO'ed holding top/top by donks calling it down to the river with bottom pair/crap kicker and binking the river,runner runnered,you name it. Just as often happened to me in the .25 45 mans.

              Have always said that once I figured out that you play to try and make the bubble every time in the 45 mans and then open up your range,try to steal from the bubble watchers and let the chips fall where they may,my results went up noticeably. These play very similar at the bubble,which in all honesty surprised me. I have also seen a fair amount of real money non-American players in these,mostly bronze and silver stars,but a couple golds and even one platinum.

              I probably played 300+ of the .25 45 mans to a +35%ish ROI so I had a pretty good handle on how they played (nothing like a certain assless chaps wearing sicko to be sure but still...)and after about a 100 hundred or so I became convinced that every time I sat in one I knew that I was going to be one of the best players in the event and played accordingly. That meant that I was not,not EVER,afraid to be sitting like 20 with 25 peeps left as I knew once I caught a hand I could get paid and I had usually figured out who the exploitable players were by then. Playing exactly the way I would in real money when I load up these play money ones. And trying out a few new moves as well.

              BTW Cairn when we get back on here (and yeah I'm still hoping/believing that it will be not too long coming...) if you hadn't noticed the .25's have a rake now so you do earn VPP/FPP's when you play. Only .11 per tourney but if you play a lot it would add up. Even the .10 360's and 240 PLO's have a .06 VPP/FPP payoff as they are now .09+.01 structured.Not how I feel about that personally,as I intend to being playing enough for the VPP/FPP points to add up,but don't like the ROI hit that will likely come with the prize payouts being given a haircut.

              My main beef with the play money structure is only being able to load up 3 tables at a time. Was really hoping to use the play money tables to work up to being comfortable at 6-8 tables.

              Oh well as Kelly Bundy would say..."Case of rum,case of rum".

                  Count me in on this, been playing the 27 man's from time to time on my own. Will update once I get a decent amount of games played.

                  @Moxie if you want to practice multi-tabling you can still load up cash tables or MTT's while playing SNG's. 3 SNG's, 4 cash tables and an MTT and you've got your 8 tables.

                    Hadn't thought of that Paid,thanks for the tip. Are there Play Money MTT's BTW? I see the 990 Hyper-Turbos but that's about it. And even they would/could count as SNG's as it's a "fill the seats and it's on" game.

                      Look under the"Tourney" and "Freeroll" tabs, MTT's run about every 20-25 mins. In general the endgame of the play money MTT's usually has several serious players on each table, so they end up playing similar to the micro MTT's during the later stages.

                        LOL,I've looked right at the effing things a million times whilst loading up my Astronomers and never "seen" them,if you get my gist,as they simply didn't register in my attention.

                        Not to sidetrack this whole thread (as I like what Cairn has started here...) but I just have to put this thought/opinion/rant out there when seeing the games listed under the freerolls tab...

                        I personally freerolled my way to the money I won on this site (all told,between PSO league payouts and SNG/MTT winning,plus FPP and Weekly Round 2's it was a little shy of $1700.00). I know quite a few others who have done the same,some American players,some not. Which brings me to my thought/opinion/rant...

                        The single biggest thing that pisses me off about BF is that we are denied even the chance to Freeroll our way up on here. I could see if the US Government wanted to block us from depositing until this sorts out,but not giving us the chance to compete for money on here,AT NO RISK TO OURSELVES,that just burns my ass. Wall Street gambled with everyones money,directly or not,and then we all picked up the tab. No one effing asked us if we were good with that---just the "They're too big to fail" BS and here ya go Plebians,eat this big chit sandwich,enjoy it and be assured,you WILL be getting seconds and thirds somewhere down the line.

                        Randy Lew and all the other US peeps that were playing for enough money that it was worth it to them to relocate...if that was me I would renounce my citizenship and never come back to this on it's way to the dustbin of history due to a government that only represents,at best,5% of our population country.

                        Eff the GOP. Eff the Dems. Eff the Tea Party,whatever the Hell that's supposed to be anyway.

                        We need the GOWS (Guillotines On Wall Street) party.

                        OK thought/opinion/rant over.

                        Shuffle up and deal.

                          I hear ya moxie but the whole hoopla over this is that the big 3 maneuvered around US banking laws to be able accept deposits and have the cash out checks cashed. If we could freeroll into a bankroll would we even be able to cash the checks upon cashing out?

                          On another note, it really pisses me off that If I moved to Tijuana, Mexico (20 mins from me now) I could play online poker, and my living expenses would be 1/2 of what they are in the states, not that I want to live in the toilet that is Tijuana, just frustrates me every time I see the lights shining from Mexico thinking about how they can play and we cant.

                            Just wondering if the buy in amounts matter. I'm not too familiar with the BOP format.
                            The 300 games are just filled w/ players who reload over and over.
                            The 2k games are better and the 10k buy ins have some decent players.
                            Just wondering..thanks.

                              No I know that Paid,but really the banking indictments were just symptomatic of UIGEA passing in the first place IMO. That was the day that the government (or more accurately one particular jizzbag in the government,I'm talking to you "Dr." Bill Frist,nice diagnosis of Terry Schiavo,1000 miles away,by videotape you quack...) decided we were children,essentially,needing to be protected from ourselves. But hey,don't ever do anything to stop banks,CC companies and loan institutions from doing every shady piece of garbage under the sun to bilk us. And the POS didn't even have the sac to pass the bill on it's own merits,sticks it on the Port Security Act as a rider.

                              Tell you what US Government,when you give US back OUR money that funded TARP,almost all of which it seems is being used by the crooks who caused the financial collapse in the first place to pay themselves unconscionable bonuses,when you pay us back that money,then and only then,can you have the temerity to tell us what we can and can't do with our money.

                              Until that day have a heaping cup of STFU and GTFO.

                              OK I'm done.Sorry for the hijack Cairn.

                              Back to poker.
