  • Bad Beat - Real Table

Okay, I was playing 2/5 NLHE at a local casino.

Five players, my hand: Offsuit AK preflop, from the button. Everyone calls $5 to see flop.

Flop=offsuit K/7/3. Small blind bets $25, Three players call to see the turn.

Turn=An eight. Small blind bets $40. I call, heads up between SB, me for the river. Pot=$180

River=Ace SB bets another $40, I raise to $100. SB calls.

SB shows 3/3 wins $380 pot with the trip.

    Did I play this correctly?

Hi Username111! Welcome to the forum. This is NOT a bad beat, as you were never ahead at any point in time in the hand. If it were me playing the hand, I'd have raised preflop to 3BB+1BB for each limper, as AKo plays much better against fewer opponents. I would then make sure that there was a 1/2 pot bet on the flop (either by me or by an opp). I would want a smaller bet, as I don't want to give odds to anyone drawing to beat me if I'm ahead (which I will be the overwhelming majority of the time). The turn, I would call their bet HU and on the river, when I get two pair, I'm going to raise. It's unfortunate that you ran into a set and this is a good reason why I want to raise preflop, as by lowering the number of opps, there will be less small pairs out there that can hit a set. Hope this helps and good luck at the tables.umbup: John (JWK24)

Good advice on the preflop raise, I think he would have folded out, he was playing tight most of the night.

      Thanks!
