  • I've been losing for a week

Hi, I've been playing poker for 3 months now and am totally frustrated. I lost my initial $100 investment but it was fine since I was learning. But this week has been unbelievable. I try to play TAG, but for example, last week everytime I had A-K I either hit a K-K and someone has A-A or flop comes with all low cards and some hits trips with something like 4-4. Today I was in BB and had A-2, I checked and flop comes 4-3-2, a guy bets low so I call, the turn is a 2 so I raise and guy calls, river is 4 and turns out the guy had A-4, I had trips and he had better! Then other hand I go in with A-K, I raise, guy calls, flop i K-K-J, I raise, he calls, turn is 10, river is something like 4, the guy ends up winning he had A-Q and made a straight beating my K trips. Then I have A-Q, flop is Q-A-4 and someone makes a flush. Most of the time I detect when someone has a better hand, but the point is, everythime I have a great openning hand it turns to s#&$t or someone ends up with a better hand, so I'm constantly loosing more money than I make the previous days. It goes on for so long that it seems to challange probabilities.
What should I do? This has been going on for a week now. If I stop playing for a day and come back it goes over and over again.

Variance is a merciless you know what and has no rhyme or reason to it. It can be a one day hiccup or a multiple month chasm of despair. Just focus on making correct decisions and play through it. Examine YOUR play after the sessions each time by studying your Hand Histories. I guarantee you that you WILL find mistakes that you made in each session that cost you money. Even in big winning sessions mistakes are made, by ALL of us. Beyond that all you can do is play through it and make sure that you are sufficiently bankrolled to be in the games that you are playing. BR management becomes paramount in importance when going through a bad patch and is often the difference between coming through it more or less intact and going Busto.

I think most of us go through a love/hate relationship with poker.

One thing you can do to help you out is tell us what you play and post some hands.
I will make it a mission to find your leaks and see if I can help.Sometimes its just a matter of playing the wrong game for you.

My experience is different from yours I won a lot to start out and went on a 1 year handing it all back course. If I knew anything about bankroll management I would not be still playing micros.
So consider yourself ahead of most of the pack that never learn anything about Bankroll and how to play.

The poker player learns that sometimes both science and common sense are wrong; that the bumblebee can fly; that, perhaps, one should never trust an expert; that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of by those with an academic bent. ~David Mamet

moxie has touched base on your topic in all aspects. umbup: the game will always be here the following day. just do not let your emotions(tilt/ego) control your bankroll. getting beat is part of the game, just forget about the beat and move on to the next hand. study all you can about all the variants of poker, knowledge is gold especially in the long run! variance is like having a girlfriend, sometimes she can be so nice and at times you can do everything right but everything goes wrong with her, so learn to get along with her mysterious ways, she loves you and she'll take care of you when you are old! lol GL at the tables m8

I've been losing for 5 years welcome to my world. You just gotta keep playing and the luck will turn around. You gotta remember your hand is not gonna win every time! Even when you think your ahead its not always the case.umbup:

I have been losing a lot of my games for a few days, but my BR management is in place so it won't really affect me there. It is still not fun though. You are in the right place to get help dealing with it, definitely get some hands analysis done, and review some of the training materials here.

If I am in that kind of rut I tend to leave the real money games and play the freerolls, just to keep my poker head on. Tonight I have even gone back to an astronomer freeroll, to remind me how much worse I used to be, and have some fun playing a game I like but would never play for cash (NL 2-7 single draw).

Just give it some time, make good decisions and the swings will turn round.

                Good luck

                          And finally A-K vs A-A

I had A-K get a pair of Ks and the other guy ends up having A-A:

                            Whoa - slow down Cletero.

You should post these in the Hand Analysis Forum - usually one hand per thread, and then the real experts here will take a look at them.

It also helps if you can load them in replayer so we get the table visuals.

I'm happy to have a look and tell you what I think on these so far, but I'm no expert.
