I am Wiseguyjim. Never heard of me? I am not surprised as I am just one of the thousands who pop on here to play some tourneys, winning a little and losing plenty. I do not think of myself as some poker guru by any means. I want to win this league this month. And I have every intention to do so. In July, I wasn't really sure what I was playing in this league for at all. It wasn't until later in the month that I even realized that Pokerstars was giving money away to those that do well. So I tried to focus and start moving up the rankings to the elusive top 10 and the one named Cosmo at the top of the leaderboard. And I did do well, ending up in 49th place. But I was frustrated the last week of July and really played in only a few tourneys those last few days. Why was I frustrated? One word. Donkeys. The league was full of them and they almost always had their way with me. Honestly though, donkeys were not the only problem I was having while trying to have success in the league. The overly aggressive players would get to me also. You know the type. The blinds are 20/10 and they are pre-flop raising 300. It would throw me off of my game and I was making bad decisions trying to beat them are their own game. Another problem I had was letting go of my big blind to a preflop raise. I would want to defend my blind to the bitter end. And then there was the ever popular all-in bet. When the blinds are 20/10 it seems that there should be no reason at all for someone to go all-in pre-flop. Yet plenty were....and I wanted in on the action. And that usually ended in total disaster. So now you can see a bit of what I went though in July (and probably many of you went through these issues also!). In my next blog I will address how I started to deal with these frustrations and come up with a winning strategy for the league. But be warned! This strategy will likely annoy others players at your table (those that have played in a good number of tourneys can probably guess what that means). It will also likely have you constantly tempted to turn away from the strategy. I won't lie. I struggle with this strategy every tournament. But if you can train yourself to stick with it, I do not think you will be disappointed. I have told some friends at work about my strategy and they think I am completely insane but I have been pleased with my results so far. I am in 37th place as of this morning and I have no intention of stopping until I have that number one next to my name on August 31st. More to come soon.....
