Delaying the game with your timer is your right, and a good strategy late in the game if you don't know if you can make the bubble or not.  But if you have a little chance at all of making the final table, in my opinion, delaying will not help you at all.   The more you delay, the less hands you see at the current blind level, and if you are on the edge, but still have a few rounds of blinds left, don't delay too much, you might just cut into the amount of hands you get to see due to blinds and antes going up, and you may miss the last hand pocket rockets that change your game outcome.

Also, the more you delay, the more people might "aim" for you and do what they can to get you out.
