Some of you may already have read the story of our first ever winner of the new Masters league, if you missed it you can find it here. In this article, we find out more about the winner of our first ever new format Initiation league. This league level is reserved for our newest members who joined the poker school within the last 3 months so they're all on a level playing field and it's a great way for a beginner to grow a bankroll and start playing some real money games. One such player that is doing just that is PokerStars School member 'muha1921' who battled against 1,060 other players to top the leaderboard at the end of the month. Let's find out more about him...

PokerStars School: Tell us a little about yourself, what's your background, where do you come from?
My name is Matija Krklec and I'm 18 years old. I come from a small town called Zaprešić in Croatia. I'm currently in my senior year and studying Economics.

PokerStars School: How did you get into poker?
When I was a kid I always loved playing card games, one day I found out about poker and I was instantly hooked. The aspects of luck and mind games intrigued me so I bought a poker set and played poker with my friends every day and learned rules and strategies as time went.

PokerStars School: Who is your poker hero, the player you admire the most and why?
I never actually had a poker hero, but I was always impressed with the skilful minds of world-class players such as Negreanu and Ivey and they inspired me to become better at the game.

PokerStars School: You won the Initiation League in January, tell us about this, was it easy or hard?
I started playing the league tournaments because I had some free time. Then when I saw the opportunity to actually win something I started to take it more seriously. I can't say it was easy because there where some highs and lows but I can't say it was hard either.

PokerStars School: What was your best tournament result of the month?
My best results in the league was when I finished 2nd two times in back-to-back tournaments.

PokerStars School: What do you like most about the new league?
It is a good opportunity for new players to improve their skill-set and win some money along the way.

Two back-to-back 2nd place results helped Matija to overall leaderboard success.

PokerStars School: Do you think that you have more chances to win T$ with the new system?
Yes, because it gives more players a chance to win more prizes.

PokerStars School: What is your favourite format? Is it tournaments, sit & go's, cash games, or spin & go's?
Tournaments, because it gives me a chance to play with a lot of different types of players all the way from the rookies to the players who played poker their whole life.

PokerStars School: Do you follow a strategy when you play poker? Sort of like a checklist while you play
I usually try to apply all that I learned but you have to actually play a lot of games so that you can learn how to use those strategies properly.

PokerStars School: In what way has the School helped you improve your poker game?
The poker here played a big part in my poker development since it taught me a lot of things from bankroll management to in-game strategy advice.

PokerStars School: What tips or advice would you recommend to other players just starting off.
Start it as a fun hobby and if you find it interesting then make use of all the articles & videos here. Study hard and play even harder.
